Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2012
Limitations of measurement techniques and increasingly complex chemical process render difficulties in obtaining certain critical process variables. The hardware sensor reading may have an obvious bias compared with the real value. Off-line laboratory analysis with high accuracy can only be...
-
Spring 2013
In the steam methane reforming process, improvement of the reformed gas outlet temperature control performance can lead to a larger hydrogen production rate, while ensuring safe process operation. In this work, a side fired primary gas reformer is investigated. The three objectives of this work...

Modelling process dynamics by the discovery of partial differential equations using a data-driven and hybrid modelling approach
DownloadFall 2021
The abundance of data and advances in data acquisition technologies have made data-driven approaches attractive to solve a multitude of problems. Differential equations deliver underlying models for most physical processes. Obtaining the fundamental physics underlying any data in the form of...

Moving horizon estimation for continuum and noncontinuum states with applications in distillation processes
DownloadFall 2011
This thesis focuses on the development of advanced state estimators for continuum and noncontinuum state estimations in a switching dynamic system, and the demonstration of their applications in addressing some important process monitoring problems of distillation processes. First, the...

Spring 2014
Energy and utilities costs often represent one of the largest operating costs at manufacturing plants and they are areas where companies can reduce cost if optimal operating strategy is applied for efficient steam distribution and electricity generation. In addition to the financial incentive,...

Fall 2016
Management of abnormal events in chemical processes requires detection and diagnosis of abnormal performance of individual elements of the system. Detection of abnormal performance is usually done by means of setting a control limit on measured variables. Abnormality due to any reason in one...

Particle Filter for Bayesian State Estimation and Its Application to Soft Sensor Development
DownloadSpring 2012
For chemical engineering processes, state estimation plays a key role in various applications such as process monitoring, fault detection, process optimization and model based control. Thanks to their distinct advantages of inference mechanism, Bayesian state estimators have been extensively...

Pattern Recognition of Time-dependent Cellular Response of Chemicals Based on Profile Shape Similarity
DownloadSpring 2014
As a potential approach to interpret Mode of Action (MoA), the shape of cellular response profiles associated with chemicals has been a key consideration. In this thesis, statistical pattern recognition methods using multiconcentration time-dependent cellular response profiles (TCRPs) are...

Performance Monitoring of Iterative Learning Control and Development of Generalized Predictive Control for Batch Processes
DownloadSpring 2012
Unlike continuous processes, a batch process has a certain period of operation time, and there are a number of batches in a typical operation. Hence variables in a batch process have dynamics in two dimensions, along time and across batches. Besides, batch processes involve large transient phases...

Spring 2024
In the process industry, certain quality variables cannot be measured regularly due to technical limitations or economic constraints. Consequently, the industry relies on laboratory analysis to measure such quality variables. However, laboratory analysis introduces long time-delays in obtaining...
