This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2013
Electrografting permits bonding of an organic film to a conductive substrate. It is therefore important to control the formation of organic films as best as possible and to understand the linkage between the organic film and the substrate as best as possible. This work explores electrografting of...

Spring 2017
Electrically induced instability of thin liquid films is a contactless pattern transfer method, often called electrohydrodynamic (EHD) lithography, which has gained extensive attention due to its ability in creation of novel micro- and nano-sized structures. The need for powerful microprocessors...

Electrolyte Supply Methods in Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis Cells with Custom Inkjet Printed Catalyst Layers
DownloadFall 2023
This work was concerned with the construction and testing of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) cells to study the effect of electrolyte feed method. Each cell used a catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) fabricated in-house by inkjet printing catalyst layers onto Aemion+ membranes using...

Fall 2013
We investigated the problem of constructing a near-field link budget to wirelessly communicate with high data rate (e.g. 3.125 Mbps) implantable circuitry located few centimeters under the skin using spread spectrum technique. Different methods and frequency bands were analyzed to choose the...

Spring 2013
This thesis presents a theoretical study of columnar films, fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD), as photonic bandgap structures and metamaterials with predictable dielectric and magnetic response. Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) employs extremely oblique vapour incidence and...

Fall 2012
An experimental single cylinder engine with variable valve timing is used to study spark ignition and homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI). The discrete wavelet transform, on a single cylinder engine with a cam-phasing head, is used in real time for knock detection in HCCI. Classical...

Electromechanical behaviour of piezoelectric actuators with partially debonded adhesive layers
DownloadFall 2019
The electromechanical behaviour of piezoelectric actuators and the adhesive layer, which connects the actuator and the host structure can have effect on the performance of smart piezoelectric structures. In this study, a newly thin-sheet piezoelectric actuator model with an adhesive layer, which...

Electromechanical Behaviour of Surface-Bonded Piezoelectric Sensors/Actuators with Imperfect Adhesive Layers
DownloadFall 2009
The performance of smart structures depends on the electromechanical behaviour of piezoelectric sensors/actuators and the bonding condition along the interface, which connects the sensor/actuator and the host structures. This thesis documents a theoretical study of the influence of material...
