This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

This thesis considers proportional reinsurance that insurance companies might employ in order to reduce risks and limit the impact of large claims. An insurance company is a typical example of a financial corporation, which can choose a production policy from an available set of control...

Hierarchical models constitute one of the most useful classes of statistical models with applications in a broad range of disciplines including, among others, social sciences, epidemiology and environmental sciences. The widely used linear mixed effects models, their extension to generalized...

Estimates of the maximal Cesaro operators of the weighted orthogonal polynomial expansions in several variables
DownloadFall 2013
Estimates of the maximal Cesaro means at the "critical index'' are established for the orthogonal polynomial expansions (OPEs) with respect to the weight function on the unit sphere. These estimates allow us to improve several known results in this area, including the almost everywhere (a.e.)...

Graphical models are frequently used to explore networks among a set of variables. Several methods for estimating sparse graphs have been proposed and their theoretical properties have been explored. There are also several selection criteria to select the optimal estimated models. However, their...

In this thesis a mathematical model of HIV transmission and diagnosis is used to estimate the total size of the HIV-positive population and the HIV incidence from HIV case report data for the Province of Alberta. Worldwide, estimates of the size of the HIV-positive population are used to...

Fall 2016
There is an increasing interest in extreme value analysis for financial and climate data. Various statistical methods have been developed for estimating extreme value dependence in time series data sets and the field continues to grow. In this work we consider four statistical methods for...

The majority of known examples of fusion categories come directly from classical structures -- vector spaces, groups, representations, and the like. In recent years the technique of constructing fusion categories as endomorphisms on Cuntz algebras was developed and has already lead to completely...
