Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2013
This thesis considers PVol (Percentage of Volume) strategies, which are an often used type of algorithmic trading strategies. In a PVol strategy, the broker aims to bring the order execution speed in line with a percentage of the market volume. This target percentage and the total order size are...

The kinetic chemotaxis equations have long been used to model biological processes. We will analyze a volume filling variant of the kinetic chemotaxis equations on the torus. Since the kinetic chemotaxis systems have well known blow-up solutions, we spend a considerable amount of time showing...

Fall 2013
A qualitative study, framed within a hermeneutic phenomenological stance, was undertaken to explore and describe the essence of the meaning of help in mathematics from the perspective of high school students. Participants were drawn from seven high schools located in the eastern and mid-eastern...

Characterizing Population Heterogeneity of Salmonella Motion in Mucosal Environments Using Stochastic Modeling and the EM Algorithm
DownloadFall 2022
Salmonella are pathogenic bacteria that infect many species including humans. This pathogen thrives in the gastrointestinal track of their hosts and propel themselves in mucus with motion structures called flagella. Each cell has multiple flagella that can rotate either synchronously, resulting...

Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group defined over a ground field $k$, and let $\mu$ be a $\Gal(k^\sep/k)$-module.A \tb{cohomological invariant} is a morphism $a:H^1(-,G)\to H^n(-,\mu)$ of two functors from the category of field extensions over $k$ to the category of setswhere $H^1(-,G)$ is the...

DEVELOPING MATHEMATICS FOR TEACHING THROUGH CONCEPT STUDY: A CASE OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS IN TANZANIA
DownloadSpring 2019
This descriptive qualitative case study investigates the question “In what ways does developing mathematics for teaching through concept study contribute to the professional knowledge and skills of pre-service teachers?” The concept studies were conducted in a classroom driven by five conditions:...

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) measures the dynamic activity of each voxel of a brain. This dissertation addresses the challenge of learning a diagnostic classifier that uses a subject’s fMRI data to distinguish subjects with neuropsychiatric disorders from healthy controls. fMRI...

From Frustration to Understanding: An Inquiry into Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Experiences with Government Mandated Examinations
DownloadSpring 2014
The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of secondary mathematics teachers’ experiences in a context of government-mandated examinations (GMEs). Having had my own experiences teaching mathematics courses where students wrote a GME, I had my own understandings of GMEs. From...

Fall 2018
In this thesis, we explore the relationship between graphical representations of the 1-dimensional N-extended supersymmetry algebra called Adinkras, compact Riemann surfaces, and quivers. An Adinkra is a graph which was originated in physics to study off-shell representations of the supersymmetry...

A great majority of children in Canada and the United States from Grades 2-6 fail to solve equivalence problems (e.g., 2 + 4 + 5 = 3 + __) despite having the requisite addition and subtraction skills. The goal of the present study was to determine the relative influence of two variables,...
