Paper Lives, Postdigital Connections: Contemporary Journaling

SSHRC IDG awarded 2023: "Paper Lives, Post-Digital Connections" will explore the unlikely, and vibrant, connection of paper journals to digitally connected international communities devoted to journaling, particularly by members of Gen-Z, on the social media platforms they use the most: YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. The project applies to journaling theories of the "post-digital," which posit that analog and digital ways of being in the world coexist, to and even work to support each other. Through interviews with media influencers, tours of key stationery stores and factories in France and Japan, and through theorizing the persistence of material writing practices in new materialist theory, book history and the study of online and paper diaries, "Paper Lives, Post-Digital Connections" is dedicated to exploring what the connections are between self-making and self-tracking on paper and via social media, in the 21st century.
