Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

On the Ability of Error in Measured Head Kinematics to Explain Strain Errors in a Brain Finite Element Model: A Regression Study Using the Simulated Injury Monitor
DownloadSpring 2019
In on-field studies considering impact to athletes, biomechanical parameters are measured to quantify the severity of a head impact and in some cases estimate the risk of head and brain injury. Wearable sensors play an important role in such studies because they are devices that measure head...

ON THE ABILITY OF PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR TO ALTER SKULL AND BRAIN KINETICS DURING BLAST AND IMPACT: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY USING A SURROGATE MODEL OF THE HUMAN HEAD WITH NOVEL INSTRUMENTATION
DownloadSpring 2019
Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has become increasingly prevalent among military personnel over recent years. Head protection is fielded to mitigate the amount of energy imparted to head, as a result of ballistic and impact exposure. Despite the efficacy of contemporary headgear in...

On the Application of Continuous Deterministic Reinforcement Learning in Neural Architecture Search
DownloadSpring 2021
Architecture evaluation is a major bottleneck of Neural Architecture Search (NAS). Recent trends have seen a shift in favor of weight-sharing networks capable of superimposing all possible candidate architectures in a search space. Nevertheless, this technique is not beyond reproach, and has...

Spring 2010
A recent study of the positronium atom showed that the energy levels could be determined numerically using an effective field theory just as easily as the underlying true theory. Here, we expand on this idea by modeling the three-body positronium-ion and four-body di-positronium molecule with...

Fall 2012
Selecting appropriate rehabilitation treatments for injured workers has been a challenging task for clinicians and health care funders. Currently, clinicians are unable to identify the optimal treatment for a patient with absolute confidence and are looking for assistance from other research...

ON THE APPLICATION OF SAFT TO MODEL FLUID-FLUID BEHAVIOR OF SOLVENT+ NON-ADSORBING POLYMER+NANOPARTICLE MIXTURES
DownloadFall 2018
Ternary mixtures comprising cyclohexane + polystyrene + silica nanoparticles were recently shown to exhibit a closed loop two-phase region comprising colloid-gas and colloid-liquid phases1. This two-phase region is surrounded by single-phase colloid-gas and colloid-liquid phase regions and there...
