This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2012
Crane lift path planning is time-consuming, prone to errors, and requires the practitioners to have exceptional visualization abilities, in particular, as the construction site is congested and dynamically changing. This research presents a methodology based on robotics motion planning to...
-
An integrated approach to assessing mobile crane mat requirements based on a novel approach to ground bearing pressure calculations and a redefining of crane mat selection and optimization
DownloadFall 2022
Modular construction is adopted to increase construction efficiency and curtail waste. The fortitude of modular construction is high-capacity mobile cranes, of which hydraulic and crawler cranes are the most widely used. With the surge in weight of modules, the mobile crane's ground bearing...

Automatic intelligent inspection systems for quality control: A case of defects in light-gauge steel frame assembly manufacturing
DownloadFall 2020
Offsite construction has become a viable alternative to traditional construction methods by establishing controlled and automated manufacturing environments for construction products. To reap the benefits of industrialized construction, manufacturing execution and quality play an important role....
-
Automation of design and drafting for wood frame structures and construction material waste minimization
DownloadFall 2009
With the creation and continuous enhancement of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, innovations in the area of computer modeling for the construction industry have brought numerous benefits in terms of precision, operability, extensibility, and time-cost savings, among others. Nevertheless, the...

Spring 2020
The development of building information modelling has facilitated the improvement of cost and time management in panelized construction, one of the most popular and efficient methods for constructing residential buildings. However, in most cases, the drainage system is currently still installed...
-
BIM-based Automated Design Checking for Building Permit in the Light-Frame Building Industry
DownloadSpring 2019
Automation of the code compliance checking process has been explored extensively, particularly in recent years with the emergence of building information modelling. Still, automated code compliance checking has not yet been fully realized, as there is no standardized method for rule...
-
BIM-based Automated Planning for Panelized Construction in the Light-Frame Building Industry
DownloadFall 2016
Building information modelling (BIM) has been recognized as an information technology with the potential to profoundly change the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, and has drawn attention from numerous scholars within the construction domain. Despite the reported...

Competitive Analysis and Value Proposition of Frozen Silt Mats as an alternative to Crane Timber Mats
DownloadFall 2018
The construction industry is adopting the modular construction paradigm with the integration of heavy crane usage. Because of the weight of the modules that are to be lifted, which currently can reach as much as hundreds of tons, ensuring proper ground integrity under the lifting equipment is...
-
Fall 2024
The increasing demand for more ef ficient and eco-f riendly building practices has led to developing and improving traditional construction methods to address building issues concerning environmental impacts and costs. However, alongside the incorporated benefits, they introduce new obstacles...

Digital Twin for Production Estimation, Scheduling and Real-Time Monitoring in Offsite Construction
DownloadFall 2023
The offsite construction industry continues to rely on experience-based average production rates (i.e., average quantity per unit of time) to estimate and schedule production operations. This approach is hindered by various sources of production variability, such as machine breakdowns and...
