Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Development and Applications of an Emissions Micro-Simulation Tool for Transportation Infrastructure Design
DownloadFall 2014
Transportation emissions constitute a significant portion of overall emissions inventories, and contribute to air quality health concerns. Reductions in transportation emissions can be achieved through efficient design of infrastructure, effective policy and regulation, and informed planning...

Fall 2011
The Kennetcook-Windsor basin is a part of the large composite Maritimes Basin in Atlantic Canada. Subsurface seismic data indicate a very complex basinal history in terms of syn-depositional deformation and superimposition of numerous episodes of fault reactivation in the basin. Faults mapped...

Development of a Framework for Assessment of Water-Energy Demand and Supply in Energy Sector
DownloadFall 2015
Water resource planning and management has become more challenging over the years. To make well-informed long-term system planning decisions, policy makers and resource managers need to fully comprehend the water-energy nexus. There is a scarcity of tools for integrated assessment of greenhouse...

Development, Modelling and Control of a Continuous Pilot Scale Supercritical Fluid Extraction Process
DownloadSpring 2017
In this thesis, the feasibility and operation of a continuous pilot scale supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process for treatment of oil-contaminated solids, specifically drill cuttings, was investigated. For this purpose, a continuous pilot scale SFE process, the first of its kind, was...

Spring 2014
This thesis documents the research undertaken to develop and assess modeling and monitoring tools to improve the water quality management in the Athabasca River, Alberta. The Upper Athabasca River (UAR) has experienced dissolved oxygen (DO) sags, which may affect the aquatic ecosystem. A water...

Electromechanical Behaviour of Surface-Bonded Piezoelectric Sensors/Actuators with Imperfect Adhesive Layers
DownloadFall 2009
The performance of smart structures depends on the electromechanical behaviour of piezoelectric sensors/actuators and the bonding condition along the interface, which connects the sensor/actuator and the host structures. This thesis documents a theoretical study of the influence of material...

Enhancing space modeling and mobile resources planning in construction operations through a simulation driven visualization framework
DownloadFall 2011
Simulation modeling is a strong tool that has not been utilized to its expected potential in day to day construction industry activities. One of the reasons contributing to that is the inability of simulation models to depict changes in site space in an intuitive way. This research tries to...

Experimental Response and Analysis Model of an Innovative Pile-To-Pile Mechanical Connector
DownloadFall 2017
Pile-to-pile mechanical connections are used when the depth of the soil layers with sufficient bearing strength exceeds the standard pile length and extensions are needed to reach the deep stable soil. Mechanical connectors permit a safe transmission of forces while meeting strength and...

Finite Element Model of the Thermal Profile During Submerged Arc Welding with One and Two Electrodes
DownloadFall 2016
The submerged-arc welding (SAW) process is used extensively in the manufacturing of pipes. The heat flow introduced by the welding operation has a significant impact on the properties of both the weld metal and the heat affected zone (HAZ). The work presented in this thesis aims to develop a...

Spring 2010
Many geological deposits contain nonlinear anisotropic features such as veins, channels, folds or local changes in orientation; numerical property modeling must account for these features to be reliable and predictive. This work incorporates locally varying anisotropy into inverse distance...
