We introduce two kinds of particle filters, one is weighted particle filter and the other is resampling particle filter. We prove the Strong Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem for both particle filters. Then, we show that the resampling particle filter is better than the weighted one.

We study the widespread logarithmic distribution of first significant digits and significands of data sets (referred to as Benford’s Law ) in the context of dynamical systems. Using recent tools and conditions under which a recursively defined sequence is Benford via the classical theory of...

Chevalley's theorem on the conjugacy of split Cartan subalgebras is one of the cornerstones of the theory of simple finite dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0. Indeed, this theorem affords the most elegant proof that the root system is an invariant of the Lie algebra. The...

This thesis is dedicated to the study of topological degree for different classes of monotone maps and applications to nonlinear problems in mathematical analysis and the applied mathematics. Employing topological methods for nonlinear problems in mathematics goes back to the pioneering work of...

This thesis presents recent developments in direct numerical simulations of fluid-structure interaction occurring in biological systems, with particular interest in the modeling of particle deposition within the human respiratory system. Two numerical techniques are proposed. The first one is...

Direction-Dependent Communication Mechanisms in Individual-Based Models of Collective Behaviour
DownloadFall 2014
In this thesis, we study direction-dependent communication mechanisms in individual-based models (IBMs) of collective behaviour. Previously, direction-dependent communication mechanism were incorporated into a non-local hyperbolic PDE model for collective behaviour. The PDE model exhibits...

Solar updraft towers offers a simple and alternative method of generating electricity. However, it is unclear on how to build a tall, free standing structure that can withstand the unpredictable and destructive force of the wind. A tower consisting of stacked inflatable toroidal elements have...

This thesis develops three major essays on Arbitrage Theory, Market’s Viabil- ity and Informational Markets. The first essay (Chapter 3) elaborates the exact connections among the No-Unbounded-Profit-with-Bounded-Risk (called NUPBR hereafter) condition, the existence of the numeraire portfolio,...
