Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Towards Molecular Quantum Computing: Laser Pulse Shaping of Quantum Logic Gates on Diatomic Molecules
DownloadFall 2012
The intent of this study is to determine the feasibility of diatomics as molecular quantum computing candidates and shed insight into the use of such experimental laser pulse shaping methods to represent quantum logic gates. Four appropriate rovibrational states of model diatomic molecules are...

Towards More Efficient and Economical Phosphorus and Bioenergy Recovery from Source-Diverted Blackwater
DownloadFall 2023
Decentralized source-diverted blackwater resource recovery represents an attractive wastewater management approach. Source-diverted blackwater refers to toilet wastewater, with or without kitchen wastewater, containing over half of the domestic biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) load and over 90% of...

Spring 2023
Traditional survey based methods for clinical depression detection are not always effective; the patient may not reflect their actual mental health condition because of the cognitive bias exhibited while filling out questionnaires about depression. Established through ample earlier work, social...

Spring 2017
The work in this thesis describes advancements made towards developing main group catalysts and designing new ligands. N-Heterocyclic imine (NHI) ligands were used to support novel boron, silicon and germanium complexes. The new boron compounds demonstrated the ability to dehydrogenate...

Towards Practical Offline Reinforcement Learning: Sample Efficient Policy Selection and Evaluation
DownloadSpring 2024
Offline reinforcement learning (RL) involves learning policies from datasets, rather than online interaction. The dissertation first investigates a critical component in offline RL: offline policy selection (OPS). Given that most offline RL algorithms require careful hyperparameter tuning, we...

Spring 2016
When controlling dynamic systems such as robots a big challenge lies in defining how the desired actions will be accomplished. In industrial settings automation has been possible due to the structured and predictable environments. The repeatability of the tasks makes it viable to manually...
