This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Metal Loss Defect Failure Analysis and Prognostics Considering Defect Interactions and Complex Service Conditions
DownloadSpring 2023
Clean energy has attracted intensive attention as the global energy transition is accelerated. Pipelines are significant for achieving large-scale clean energy transportation. Meanwhile, gears are vital components in wind turbines. Metal loss defects are dominant faults of pipelines and gears,...

III-V Nitrides are intriguing semiconductors for high-power RF amplifiers and other applications. Gallium Nitride has become popular for mm-HFETs due to its material properties. The HFET however, has yet to fully realize the full potential of GaN. MOSFETs provide an ideal structure because they...

Metal particle catalyst formation from thin films for the creation of vertically aligned carbon nanotube structures
DownloadFall 2011
This work contains research associated with the metal catalysts used in the formation of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) films through catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CCVD). The solid-state dewetting process of thin metal films is studied using Ni. In the dewetting process, grain...

Fall 2010
Carboxylated macromolecules such as alginate and glycoproteins are abundant components of modern shallow marine sediments where they are secreted by bacteria and marine infauna. Both organic compounds are proton and metal reactive; hence, they have the potential to facilitate metal sorption and...

Metal-Insulator Transition and IR Detection of Thin Films Fabricated by Pulsed Laser Deposition
DownloadFall 2018
Current thin film technologies and devices require high quality deposits in order to fully extract the potential of the material. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is one physical vapour deposition method used to synthesize these high quality complex films. PLD offers the distinct advantage of being...

Fall 2015
Ice accretion is a problem that affects the performance and safety of structures that are exposed to cold weather environments. In wind energy production, a constantly growing industry, ice accretion has been found to decrease the performance, produce mechanical failures, and decrease the safety...

Metallic thin films for NEMS/MEMS: from fundamental behaviour to microstructural design and fabrication
DownloadFall 2011
The main focus of this thesis is the study of thin metal films in microelectromechanical/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), ranging from application to fundamental behaviour. The use of metallic structural components is desirable since they are electrically conductive, optically reflective...
