This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

The demand for large dataset and demand of privacy protection are in constantly conflicts as the balance between the two is hard to keep. Differential privacy is a mathematical rigor definition that provides the balance bewteen these two opposite sides. It's developed with the purpose of making...

Fall 2010
Data reconciliation and gross error detection are traditional methods toward detecting mass balance inconsistency within process instrument data. These methods use a static approach for statistical evaluation. This thesis is concerned with using an alternative statistical approach (Bayesian...

Bayesian Nonlinear Finite Element Model Updating of Bridge Columns considering Bond-slip and Rebar Buckling using Experimental and Simulated Data
DownloadSpring 2021
Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges are key elements in modern transportation system. Therefore, the serviceability and safety of such structures after earthquakes have become an area of great interest. Developing an accurate FE model that is capable of representing the important mechanics of RC...

Fall 2014
While there has been much literature in the area of system monitoring and diagnosis, most of these techniques have a relatively small scope in terms of the faults and performance issues that they are built to detect. When implementing several monitors simultaneously on a single process, a single...

Fall 2013
In many industrial plants, development and implementation of advanced monitoring and control techniques require real-time measurement of process quality variables. However, on-line acquisition of such data may involve difficulties due to inadequacy of measurement techniques or low reliability of...

Fall 2021
Kernel methods are often used for nonlinear regression and classification in machine learning because they are computationally cheap and accurate. Fourier basis and wavelet basis are the bases that can efficiently approximate the kernel functions. In previous research, Bayesian approximate kernel...

Fall 2013
We present a Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) based algorithm, with promising potential, that can be used at the level-2 stage of the ATLAS Hadronic Tau Trigger for the selection of a single hadronically decaying tau lepton. The results indicate that our algorithm outperforms the current algorithm on...

Despite the widely acknowledged importance of university leadership, North American universities are facing a scarcity of senior faculty able or willing to take on leadership positions, including department chairships (Luna, 2012; Appadurai, 2009; Gmelch & Miskin, 2011). While professors often...

This study, which adopts the physical modelling technique to investigate caprock deformation behaviour, intends to elucidate the impact of steam chamber expansion rate on caprock integrity. This study develops a synthetic material to replicate the behaviour of Clearwater Formation shale for the...
