BDT-Based Single Tau Selection Algorithm for the Level-2 ATLAS Hadronic Tau Trigger

  • Author / Creator

  • We present a Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) based algorithm, with promising potential, that can be used at the level-2 stage of the ATLAS Hadronic Tau Trigger for the selection of a single hadronically decaying tau lepton. The results indicate that our algorithm outperforms the current algorithm on a wide variety of measures. The BDT trigger adds (8.242±0.068±0.321)% to the Z → τ τ signal RoI-wise acceptance rate of the reference trigger and adds (10.628 ± 0.069 ± 0.276)% to the Z → τ τ signal event-wise acceptance rate of the reference trigger. Not only does the BDT trigger outperform the current trigger for Standard Model signal channels, but it also dominates the current trigger for yet undiscovered high mass
resonances that will be more accessible in the upcoming (higher energy) running period.
