This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2014
We develop an approach for optimizing Hidden Markov model representations of voltage-gated ion channels that addresses the issues of topology determination and poorly performing optimization algorithms. Developing accurate models of neurological processes is a major goal of computational...

Optimization of Vector Instructions in Divergent Control Flow on Long-Vector Architectures using Active-Lane Consolidation
DownloadFall 2021
IF-conversion is a classic Control-Flow Graph (CFG) transformation that linearizes the basic blocks in a loop and assigns a predicate to them to enable or disable execution. IF-conversion is performed before vectorization where scalar statements are translated into vector statements to enable the...

In batch policy evaluation the goal is to predict the value of a policy given some historical data. A specific example, which motivated the approach pursued in this thesis, is to predict the probability of putting a natural wildfire out given some specific configuration of dispatched resources,...

Fall 2018
The left ventricle segmentation is an important medical imaging task necessary to measure a patient's heart pumping efficiency. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have shown great potential in achieving state-of-the-art segmentation for such applications. However, most of the research...

Optimizing Task Distribution and Shared-Variable Accesses in an Asynchronous-Partitioned-Global-Address-Space Programming Model
DownloadSpring 2015
High-performance programming systems employ a wide range of techniques to improve the performance of parallel and distributed applications on large scale machines. This dissertation identifies a novel opportunity of load balancing, proposes a new approach for workload distribution, and presents a...

Panel-based prefabricated retrofits of existing building envelopes are considered a promising strategy for improving energy performance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These projects typically require some form of 3D model of the as-is building geometry, in order to construct the panels...
