This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2014
Gene delivery is an emerging therapy for treatment of many different diseases and conditions, with the first therapy recently approved for clinical use. This thesis investigates non-viral carriers for gene delivery for bone regeneration, with an emphasis on the mechanisms of plasmid DNA (pDNA)...

In-silico Methods for Drug Discovery: Applications of Molecular Dynamics, Drug Docking, and Machine Learning
DownloadSpring 2024
Drug discovery is a venture that is costly in both time and money. In-silico methods are a core part of biomedical research, from traditional tools such as drug docking and molecular dynamics to newer machine learning frameworks, all of which are more efficient in both time and cost compared to...

Influences of grain boundaries and surface nanocrystallization of stainless Steel on Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm’s Adherence
DownloadSpring 2011
A common complication associated with medical implants is the infectious bio-film, which can cause chronic infection that is difficult to control. Grain boundaries (GBs) in materials of medical implants are often preferential locations for bacteria to congregate, which could be attributed to...

Instrumenting and Validating a Vibrotactile Device to Assess and Rehabilitate Dynamic Seated Balance
DownloadFall 2017
Tools that effectively assess and train dynamic seated balance are critical for enhancing functional independence and reducing risk of secondary health complications in the elderly and individuals with neuromuscular impairments. On the one hand, current assessment tools quantify changes in the...

Integrated Classification of Cannabis Strains Marketed in Canada for Medical Purposes Based on Genetic, Chemical Profiles, and Morphological Traits
DownloadFall 2021
The vernacular naming convention commonly used by the cannabis community (“Sativa” and “Indica”) is inadequate for identifying or selecting strains for clinical research and medicinal production because they are arbitrary and inconsistent. In addition, they mostly contain tetrahydrocannabinol...

Investigation into the effect of compliant response on fluid flow in an ex vivo heart perfusion test system
DownloadSpring 2017
Demand for heart transplants far exceeds supply. This is often attributed to the high percentage of donor hearts that are discarded due to cell injury and to the narrow six-hour time window currently available for transplantation. A method called ex vivo heart perfusion (EVHP) enables the use of...

Fall 2013
This thesis is focussed on bone tissue engineering for improving the osseointegration of joint implants. We have incorporated nano-scaled materials called as Rosette Nanotubes (RNTs) which mimic the geometry of the natural components of bone with the growth factor, Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7...
