This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

A Comprehensive Study of Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks for Noise Reduction in Optical Coherence Tomography
DownloadFall 2024
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been widely adopted as an imaging modality for various clinical applications, such as breast cancer screening, retinal imaging, and vascular assessment, due to its non-invasive nature. However, OCT is affected by coherent speckle noise, which impairs OCT...

Advancing Automated Depression Diagnosis: Multimodal Analysis and a Novel Clinical Interview Corpus with Guidelines for Reproducibility and Generalizability
DownloadFall 2024
Depression is a major public health issue globally and is challenging to diagnose and treat in the early clinical stage due to the lack of understanding of the pathogenic mechanism. Traditional diagnosis heavily relies on physicians' experience and is subject to bias. With the advancement of...

Alzheimer’s Dementia Detection Through Machine Learning: Analyzing Linguistic and Acoustic Features in Spontaneous Speech
DownloadFall 2023
With the rapid aging of the world’s population, the global burden of aging related mental disorders, such as Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), is also on the rise. Unfortunately global healthcare systems are vastly under-resourced, which means that many people who need mental health services are unable...

Spring 2013
The game of Amazons is a young board game with simple rules, nice mathematical properties yet a high complexity between chess and Go. The state of the art Amazons solver was presented by Martin Müller in 2001 with which he solved the Amazons 5 × 5 starting position as a first player win. This...

Fall 2009
Electrical machine condition monitoring plays an important role in modern industries. Instead of allowing the machines to run until failure, it is preferred to gather more information about the machine condition before the machine is shut down, so that the machine downtime can be reduced due to...

Spring 2018
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been extensively used for fluid flow simulation and thus, guiding the flow control device design. However, CFD simulation requires explicit geometry input and complicated solver setup, which is a barrier in case of the cyclic CAD/CFD integrated design...

Data-Driven Approaches to Estimate the Impact and Presence of Shale Barriers in SAGD Reservoirs
DownloadSpring 2019
Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is one of the most successful in-situ techniques and has been widely adopted for heavy oil and bitumen recovery. Steam chamber development and SAGD production performance are highly sensitive to the reservoir heterogeneity, thus characterizing shale...
