This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Learning in silico Reactant and Bond-of-Metabolism Predictors for Human Cytochrome P450 Enzymes
DownloadFall 2019
Human beings are exposed to many chemicals through their routine interactions with the environment, such as food/drug consumption, household or workplace activities, industrial or transportation activities, and even common environmental processes. Once absorbed, these chemicals are usually...

Fall 2009
In this thesis we consider the task of catching a moving target with multiple pursuers, also known as the “Pursuit Game”, in which coordination among the pursuers is critical. Our testbed is inspired by the pursuit problem in video games, which require fast planning to guarantee fluid frame...

Leveraging Natural language Processing and Machine Learning Techniques to find Frailty Deficits from Clinical Dataset
DownloadSpring 2023
Introduction Frailty is a syndrome that is often associated with aging. It can be identified through specific frailty scales or a comprehensive assessment by a healthcare provider. In Alberta, it appears that there are no specific billing or diagnostic codes for frailty. So, healthcare providers...

Leveraging spectroscopic sensor measurements for development of models for reactions involving complex feedstocks
DownloadFall 2024
Chemically heterogeneous feedstocks are being increasingly used in process industries due to depletion of conventional feedstocks, to meet environmental demands and to recover value added products from wastes. Chemical modeling of reactive transformations of such complex feedstocks involves...

Fall 2021
The spatiotemporal distribution of hydraulic fracturing-induced microseismicity is complicated and depends on various mechanical and diffusional parameters. Hydraulic fracture modeling can aid in understanding fluid-induced microseismicity. Nevertheless, the interaction of several physical...

Machine Learning and Text Mining: A New Approach to Determine the Weather Effects on Construction Incidents
DownloadSpring 2024
In the construction industry, safety standards are not only a priority but a necessity due to the dynamic nature of the field. Workplace safety is a complex issue influenced by a variety of factors that are constantly evolving. Each incident has the potential to impact the industry's intricate...

Fall 2019
A rock burst refers to a sudden collapse and outburst of rocks mostly from the surface of underground excavations. As one of the most serious geological disasters, rock bursts have killed hundreds of miners and injured more. A problem that remains to be solved in rock engineering is to predict an...

Machine learning classification of plant genotypes grown under different light conditions through the integration of multi-scale time-series data
DownloadFall 2023
In order to mitigate the effects of a changing climate, agriculture requires more effective evaluation, selection, and production of crop cultivars in order to accelerate genotype-to-phenotype connections and the selection of beneficial traits. Critically, plant growth and development are highly...

Machine Learning on Speech Audio for Extracting Indicators of Psychiatric and Neurodegenerative Conditions
DownloadFall 2024
The objective of this thesis is to develop and validate computational models of vocal expressions to predict the severity of (i) psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and stress, and (ii) neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) and mild cognitive impairment...
