Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Life Cycle Assessment and Greenhouse Gas Abatement Costs of Hydrogen Production from Underground Coal Gasification
DownloadSpring 2015
Large amounts of hydrogen (H2) are required for the upgrading of bitumen from oil sands to produce synthetic crude oil (SCO). Currently, natural gas is used in the bitumen upgrading industry to produce H2 through steam methane reforming (SMR). This process has a significant life cycle greenhouse...

Spring 2015
Evaluating the process performance of mining and petroleum operations requires numerical geological models of many related rock properties or variables. Taken together, they provide a characterization of the geologic deposit that forms the basis for engineering design and decision making. Complex...

Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a valuable liquid chromatography tool for the analytical or preparative fractionation of proteins and polymers. SEC separates macromolecules according to differences in their hydrodynamic volumes. It does not rely on any binding between the solutes and the...

Fall 2013
This thesis presents techniques to measure the human arm's mechanical impedance using a rehabilitation robot, drawing applications to telerehabilitation and patient motor function assessment. Conventional teleoperation system stability analysis and control assumes the human operator remains...

Spring 2015
Fault detection methods have become an important tool in the prevention of safety and reliability issues for industrial rotating machines. Faults in these machines often develop progressively and are not easily observed under operating conditions until severe damage has occurred and further...

Spring 2013
In this thesis, methods for improving needle steering during prostate brachytherapy are studied. Brachytherapy is a minimally-invasive, out-patient therapy for prostate cancer treatment with a fast recovery time. Success of brachytherapy depends on precise placement of needle tips in pre-planned...

Fall 2009
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a promising method for combustion engines to provide a substantial reduction in fuel consumption and formation of both nitrogen oxides and soot pollutants in automotive and stationary engines. Control of HCCI combustion timing is essential for the...

Modeling and Optimization of CO2 Fixation using Microalgae Cultivated in Oil Sands Process Water
DownloadSpring 2015
Biological fixation of CO2 using microalgae is a potential CO2 reduction strategy which can be applied to the oil sands operations in Alberta. These operations also produce large amounts of oil sands process water (OSPW), which can act as a growth medium for the microalgae. In this thesis, three...

Caverhill-Godkewitsch, Saul A.
The infrastructure necessary to support diagnostic and pathogen-detection processes does not exist in some regions of the world that need it most. Access to fast, inexpensive and portable diagnostic infrastructure could be a solution to this problem. Next generation lab-on-chip (LOC) systems that...

Modeling of the Effect of Run-out Table Cooling on the Microstructure of a Thick Walled X70 Skelp
DownloadSpring 2018
This thesis presents work performed to model and measure the effect of run-out table cooling on a thick walled X70 steel. During run-out table cooling, the steel undergoes several phase transformations that will affect its microstructure, and thus, its mechanical properties. To predict the steel...
