SSHRC IDG awarded 2021: This study will investigate the beliefs and knowledge second language (L2) speakers of English have about English pronunciation and its importance to successful communication. Further, it will examine learners’ ability to critically evaluate pronunciation training programs and materials available in the unregulated language learning marketplace. The current project will shed light on pronunciation development from the learners’ perspective. It will uncover not only how much L2 speakers know about pronunciation and its development, but will also evaluate how they choose pronunciation materials. This is particularly important in of light concerns experts have raised over the quality of many materials currently available, and the ethically questionable nature of the advertising used to sell these products. Many studies have investigated second language teachers’ beliefs around pronunciation instruction, but research has failed to investigate second language pronunciation from the perspective of those it impacts the most: second language speakers.
