SSHRC IDG awarded 2020: In this proposal, I integrate thinking from political science, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience to explore one reason why these divides continue to deepen and how they may be bridged. I will examine liberals and conservatives to demonstrate that seeking tolerance involves conflict and prompts a backlash unless conflict can be reduced by self distancing. Specifically, I propose three experiments that more directly measure conflict using electroencephalography (EEG) and will achieve three aims. Study 1 will demonstrate that tolerance can cause conflict for both liberals and conservatives. Study 2 will demonstrate that conflict from tolerance leads to increased political division. Study 3 will demonstrate self distancing can reduce conflict from tolerance and reduce political division.
