Syncrude Canada Ltd. Reports
The Syncrude Joint Venture began in 1964, with company-sponsored Research and Development (R&D) activities focused on the Athabasca Oil Sands of northeastern Alberta. Mining at Syncrude’s Mildred Lake site began in 1977, and Syncrude has continued a robust and comprehensive R&D program since that time. The goal of Syncrude R&D is to contribute to the body of knowledge that supports the responsible development of Alberta’s oil sands resource, including minimizing environmental impacts and maintaining the ecological integrity of the area in which we operate. Much of Syncrude’s environmental R&D is done collaboratively with Universities, and results are available in peer-reviewed journals. There is also a large body of internally-conducted research work, including research reports, consultant reports and regulatory submissions. Syncrude is excited to partner with the University of Alberta to make more of its environmental R&D work publicly accessible. We hope this information will be helpful to the scientific community and Albertans who are interested in the sound ecological management of Alberta’s natural resources. This collection includes Environmental Research Monographs and a Professional paper series from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, as well as more recent reports. We are committed to adding to this collection as new reports and information become available. Each report contains usage permissions. 1976-01-01
This predictive study is based on the results of the first year of data collection respecting the meteorological factors that may influence the dispersion of atmospheric emissions in and through the air over the Athabasca Tar Sands region executed by MEP under contract to Shell Canada Ltd.,...

1978
Hourly data on net surface radiation (Q) on a horizontal surface are analyzed. An equation which computes the diurnal variation of Q from a knowledge of cloud cover and the sun's declination is presented for use in operational air quality models. The three constants in the model (characteristic...

Concord Scientific Corporation
Concord Scientific Corporation has conducted a study of emissions from the main stack at Syncrude Canada Limited’s Mildred Lake plant. The terms of reference for this study were: • To carry out a field stack sampling program and associated chemical analyses to determine selected metallic elements...

A study of potential ice fog and low temperature water fog occurrence at Mildred Lake, Alberta
Download1976
In early 1976 a literature review of low temperature fog was carried out so that the potential for this fog type in the vicinity of the Syncrude synthetic crude oil complex could be assessed. Moreover, a site visit under suitable synoptic meteorological conditions was made in early March 1976 to...

1977
A network of 56 permanent plots, radiating from the periphery of the Syncrude Lease, was established during the summer of 1976. This network will allow continuous quantitative monitoring of the lichen flora using photographic techniques. Since lichens are highly sensitive to air pollutants such...

1985
Atmospheric emissions from oil sands plants are regulated by government. Both Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc. independently operate emission and air quality monitoring and reporting systems. The systems include air quality monitoring trailers and sulphation cylinder stations. In addition...

1979
The random fluctuations of concentration levels in a plume is studied using a wind tunnel simulation of dispersion in the neutrally stable atmospheric boundary layer. A fast response hot - film probe is developed and used to measure high frequency fluctuations of helium tracer concentration in...

Kramer, J.R., McMahon, T.A., Denison, P.J.
An in-depth review of the literature related to deposition of gases and particulates by dry deposition and precipitation scavenging is reported. Recommendations are made on the hypotheses, algorithms or models considered to be most suitable for incorporation into a pollutant transport and...

1976
A study was undertaken in 1975 to determine the scientific, technical and economic feasibility of establishing air pollution effect gradients using lichenological methods on a radially arranged pattern of observation sites. The data acquired from 12 lichen sample plots indicate that the flora is...
