This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2024
The manufacturing sector stands as a fundamental pillar of worldwide economies, contributing markedly to global economic expansion. Over the past five years, the implementation of automated machine-tending systems has widely extended from simulation or laboratory environments to real-world...
-
Spring 2018
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been extensively used for fluid flow simulation and thus, guiding the flow control device design. However, CFD simulation requires explicit geometry input and complicated solver setup, which is a barrier in case of the cyclic CAD/CFD integrated design...

Determination of Optimal Sites for Municipal Solid Waste-to-Value-Added Facilities for Canada through Geographical Information System Modelling
DownloadFall 2020
Sustainable management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the biggest challenges faced by economies worldwide. Rising waste generation rates, limited land resources, and environmental and public health issues raised by conventional land disposal have shifted the focus of decision-makers...

Spring 2017
Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is one of the most popular methods used for heavy oil extraction in Canada. Of the existing sand control methods that can be used for SAGD, slotted liners can be considered among the superior ones in terms of their performance and cost of manufacturing. RGL...

Spring 2011
This research investigates and proposes methods to be used for the automation of the conceptual design phases of variational mechanisms. It employs the concept of feature-based modeling approaches. A method is proposed for integrating the dimensional synthesis, mechanical design and CAD...
-
Spring 2022
Industrial process modeling is currently undergoing a fundamental transformation, leading towards interconnected closed-loop twins of models, i.e., the parametrically-controlled real-world physics model, and its corresponding digitalized virtual system model. However, with the application of...
-
Spring 2018
Engineering design is a complex process. There are unknowns and uncertainties. To better support engineering design, researches on different aspects of engineering design need to be conducted. Function concepts represent the engineering design purposes of the product elements and are usually...
-
Spring 2019
In order to assist in the management of complex engineering design tasks, a famework is proposed which allows for the formal modelling and coordination of design activities as a Cyber-Physical System. Unified feature models are used to define the design tasks employed in the design process, and...

Spring 2011
The current well planning practice is usually done section by section with limited help of some knowledge-based tools. This thesis presents an integrated approach and a software prototype developed for well planning. It considers the geological input, i.e. pore pressure, over burden etc., to...

Using Machine Learning and Keyword Analysis to Analyze Incident Reports and Reduce Risk in Oil Sands Operations
DownloadSpring 2020
Many companies maintain large databases of incident reports. Incidents that have severe consequences are analyzed in detail to prevent recurrence, while minor incidents are typically stored without any further evaluation. Especially with common incidents and those with lesser consequences,...
