Effects of linear anthropogenic corridors on insect pollinator movement and diversity, and understory shrub fruit production in the boreal forest of northeastern Alberta
DownloadSpring 2021
Fragmentation of habitats is a primary concern in the conservation of global biodiversity. Anthropogenic linear disturbances, such as roads, trails, and power lines, are a major source of habitat fragmentation worldwide. In Alberta’s boreal forest, a common, pervasive type of disturbance is...

Spring 2011
This thesis examined the effects of long-term inhibition of excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) on the excitability of dorsal horn neurons in defined-medium organotypic slice cultures (DMOTCs). Previous reports suggest that inhibition of EAAT2 may be involved in development of neuropathic...

Effects of long-term nitrogen and sulfur deposition on soil microbial communities and soil properties in the Athabasca oil sands region in northern Alberta, Canada
DownloadFall 2016
Intensified oil sands activities have resulted in elevated levels of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) deposition in the mixedwood boreal forest in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR) of northern Alberta, Canada. The deposition of N and S can affect the surrounding ecosystem and it is important to...

Effects of macrophages and noggin suppression on the BMP-2-induced osteogenesis of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells
DownloadSpring 2011
The osteogenic effects of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are less profound than expected as compared with rodent cells, and supraphysiological dose of BMP-2 is required to achieve desired clinical outcome. The mechanism for this phenomenon is unclear....
