This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2021
Middleton, Steven Mark William
A numerical model and software interface for the design and modelling of Stirling engines was presented. This model was developed to suit low-temperature Stirling engines, those that run at source temperature of less than 150 °C and run at speeds where temporarily developed losses become...

A Particle Engineering Approach to the Development of Microparticles Suitable for Enteric Delivery of Biologics
DownloadFall 2021
Despite tremendous advances in the field of medical science, enteric infections still account for millions of deaths globally each year. Inaccessibility to clean drinking water, sanitation systems and proper healthcare infrastructure in developing parts of the world remains a huge obstacle to...

A Stochastic Finite Element Analysis Framework for the Multiple Physical Modeling of Filler Modified Polymers
DownloadSpring 2021
Hamidreza Ahmadimoghaddamseighalani
Polymers have various attractive properties (e.g., low volume mass density, low cost and excellent degradation resistance), and hence, they have become essential for a wide range of applications (e.g., aerospace, oil and gas and renewable energy industries). However, due to their limited...

Alternative Methods and Improvements to Current Delivery of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure for Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea
DownloadFall 2021
For adults, the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the delivery of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) through nasal/facial masks. For children, CPAP therapy is used if adenotonsillectomy is not a viable option or if OSA persists after surgery. By acting as a pneumatic...

An Assessment of the Penetration of Low Carbon Technologies in the Energy Demand and Supply Sectors
DownloadSpring 2021
The penetration of emerging low carbon energy technologies in the energy sector can provide significant opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. An assessment of the market penetration of energy technologies can also help us understand their future adoption, which is critical in...

Spring 2021
This thesis applies computer vision and machine learning techniques to three engineering projects: a self-driving vehicle, a predictive display system, and a vision-based robot manipulator joint detector. In the first project, we build a remote-controlled car and implement three core self-driving...

Fall 2021
Static mixers are in-line motionless devices placed into a pipe to promote the blending of miscible fluids or dispersion of immiscible liquids. These inserts are characterized by the mixing performance and the pressure drop they create. New designs of static mixers are continuously proposed to...

The near wake behind the Ahmed body at zero-yaw has been extensively studied in the past, but comparatively little is known about the changes in the wake flow patterns during crossflow. Measurements of the near wake of a square-back Ahmed body were obtained at a Reynolds Number of ReH = 9.2104...

Spring 2021
Azadeh Ebrahimian Hosseinabadi
Approaches for accurate prediction of ductile failure of polyethylene (PE) pipe have been developed. The main objective of this thesis is to characterize deformation and mechanical behaviour of PE material under different conditions which contribute to PE failure. For this purpose, two different...

Deformation and fracture behaviour of extruded CPVC sheet and pipe after exposure to chemical solvents
DownloadSpring 2021
The work described in this thesis concerns the influence of chemical solvents (acetone and primer) on the strength and ductility of extruded chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) sheet with a nominal thickness of 1/32-inch, and of pipe that is 2-inch in diameter. The work also includes finite...
