This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2024
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) are promising energy conversion devices that offer high efficiency and low environmental impact. In order to understand and accurately estimate the SOFCs performance, advanced modeling techniques are required due to SOFCs complicated multi-physics nature and complex...

Fall 2023
Riverbank erosion poses significant environmental and infrastructural challenges, including soil loss, damage to infrastructure, flooding, and threats to wildlife and vegetation. Erosion control structures are essential for mitigating this issue, and geobags have been used as a fundamental...

Characterising Three Dimensional Deformations and Strains of Orthodontic Archwires under Torsion
DownloadFall 2020
In orthodontics, braces are commonly used to correct dental misalignments. Third-order torque refers to the application of torsion to correct angular inclinations of teeth. Its application involves the use of a twisted archwire inside of an orthodontic bracket to generate the required forces and...

Spring 2013
The classical Battelle two-curve method is proved to be non-conservative in calculating the arrest fracture toughness of high grade line pipes. In this thesis, first, the concept of ―limit (crack) speed‖ is introduced to the existing two-curve method, which leads to a modified two-curve method...

Characterization and Control of Cyclic Variability in a Gasoline/Natural Gas Dual-Injection Spark Ignition Engine
DownloadSpring 2016
Reducing the cyclic variability of a gasoline/natural gas dual injection spark ignition engine using minimum variance control is the subject of this thesis. Cylinder pressure is used to calculate four combustion metrics, the standard deviation of which is used as an indicator of cyclic...

Twisted yarns are commonly used in traditional textiles applications, such as in apparel manufacture, but their study and use in composite textiles is limited, especially in the case of continuous multifilament yarns. In textiles applications, small amounts of twist have shown to increase the...

Characterization and Modeling of Natural-Fibres-Reinforced composites (Moisture Absorption Kinetics, Monotonic Behaviour and Cyclic Behaviour)
DownloadFall 2014
Natural fibres have been shown to offer a good potential in replacing or supplementing synthetic fibres in composite material applications. To fully utilize these new materials in design, however, engineering models of the mechanical behaviour need to be developed and ...

Fall 2021
The near wake behind the Ahmed body at zero-yaw has been extensively studied in the past, but comparatively little is known about the changes in the wake flow patterns during crossflow. Measurements of the near wake of a square-back Ahmed body were obtained at a Reynolds Number of ReH = 9.2104...

Characterization of Abrasive Wear by Mass Loss and Acoustic Emission using the Ball-on-Plate Testing
DownloadSpring 2022
The present work developed an automated ball-on-plate abrasive wear tester and examined the material abrasion wear resistance by volume loss and their acoustic emission characteristics. The performance of three types of materials with varying material properties, including aluminum,...
