This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Understanding human immunodeficiency-1 (HIV-1) replication and latency in different reservoirs is an ongoing challenge in the care of patients with HIV/AIDS. A mathematical model was created that predicted HIV-1 and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection dynamics within the brain during...

Ionizing radiation is widely used in treatment and medical diagnosis. Doses in the range of 1.5 Gy to 10 Gy are used in radiation treatment of cancer. Lower doses (less than 1.5 Gy) are used in medical imaging, and also are incurred by tissues that are near irradiated target volumes. The impact...

In this thesis, we investigate the formation and movement of self-organizing collectives of animals in homogeneous environments. For this, we propose a general modeling framework that incorporates how individuals perceive information from neighbors, and the amount of information perceived. In...

Fall 2017
This thesis focuses on formulating and analyzing non linear models for microbial dynamics vis-a-vis human and environmental health. Firstly, we develop and investigate a stoichiometric organic matter decomposition model in a chemostat culture that incorporates the dynamics of grazers. This...

Fall 2013
Partial differential equations (PDEs) have been used to model the movement of bacteria, phages, and animals. Species movement and competition exist in many interesting practical applications such as dental plaque, animal movement, and infectious diseases. This dissertation consists of three main...

In this thesis, we will study singular solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (ut+6uux+uxxx)x+3α^2 u_yy=0, α^2=±1 that will help improve our understanding and if possible give indicators to the occurrence of rogue waves. We will only study the nonlinear interaction of two such...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a “kissing disease virus” that has infected more than 95% of the adult human population. It has been associated with diseases such as Acute Infectious Mononucleosis (AIM) and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). The kinetics of primary EBV infection has...

Modeling the Transmission of Tuberculosis in Long-Term Care Facilities using a Network Model
DownloadFall 2012
Tuberculosis (TB) infection in the elderly is frequently misdiagnosed. The resulting treatment delay may increase TB transmission which is higher in long-term care (LTC) facilities. The CDC's recommendations to prevent and control TB in LTC facilities include TB education and better initial...

Mathematical model and numerical computation play a pivotal role in modern geophysical exploration. By applying computational algorithms to the observed field data, the underground structure can be inferred. This process is generally referred as a geophysical inversion problem. However, due to...
