This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2017
Steel threaded micropiles are a new deep foundation system recently introduced to the piling industry of North America. This pile consists of a steel threaded tubular shaft that is tapered at the lower segment. Steel threaded micropiles are quick to install, easy to dismantle, and have been...

FIELD INVESTIGATION AND NUMERICAL MODELLING OF MICRO SCREW PILES UNDER AXIAL AND LATERAL LOADINGS
DownloadFall 2022
A micro screw pile is a multi-sectional pile that consists of a smooth segment at the top, a threaded segment in the middle and a tapered segment at the bottom. Due to limited information on the performance, design and behaviour of micro screw piles, further research is required to study the...

Field investigation and performance-based seismic design of rocking shallow foundations in cohesive soil
DownloadFall 2019
This research investigated the use of rocking shallow foundations in improving the seismic performance of soil-footing-structure systems. A series of lateral loading tests of large-scale rocking foundation systems in natural cohesive soil were conducted and a performance-based seismic design...

Field Testing of Helical Piles and SPT-based Method for Estimating Axial Capacities in Sand
DownloadFall 2021
Helical piles comprise of at least one helical-shaped bearing plates appended to the square or round shafts. In the past decades, helical piles have gained significant popularity across Canada in various foundation applications such as power transmission towers, bridges, solar farm, and...

Finite Element Analysis Model for Determination of In-situ and Mining Induced Stresses as a Function of Two Different Mining Methods Used at Diavik Diamond Mine
DownloadFall 2016
One of the essential components of the underground excavation design process, which directly influences the performance and stability of underground constructions, is knowledge of the in-situ and mining-induced stress. Knowing the magnitudes and directions of these stresses can help determine...
-
FINITE ELEMENT CHARACTERIZATION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF MASONRY INFILL SHEAR WALLS WITH AND WITHOUT OPENINGS
DownloadFall 2014
The current design practice is to ignore the interaction between masonry infill walls and containing frames due to the inadequate and incomplete guidance in current codes and standards. Most investigations on the behaviour of masonry infill shear walls were performed on scaled specimens and...
-
Finite Element Modeling and Vibration Simulation of a 5-MW 61.5-Meter Composite Wind Turbine Blade for Debonding Damage Inference
DownloadFall 2023
The renewable and clean energy industry highly relies on wind turbine blades (WTBs) to generate electricity from wind. However, WTBs can suffer from a variety of damage, including spar cap-shear web debonding, which can lead to crack initiation and propagation, and in turn, cause wind turbine...

Fall 2017
A recent application of borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) technology to residential properties in Canada shows a significant reduction in the use of natural gas thereby saving energy consumption and reducing the generation of greenhouse gases. However, due to the construction principles of...
