This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Development and Application of Hydraulic Fracturing Simulation for Analysis of Fracture Interference and Distributed Acoustic Sensing Characterization
DownloadFall 2023
Low-frequency distributed acoustic sensing (LF-DAS) is one of the promising diagnostic techniques to detect and characterize hydraulic fractures. LF-DAS signals can capture fracture hits and the strain field around the hydraulic fracture and provide continuous monitoring of fracture geometry and...

Spring 2014
Oil sand reservoirs play an important role in the economy of Canada due to their significant recoverable reserves. Due to the high viscosity of the oil in these reservoirs, conventional methods cannot be used for production. The steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) method is an efficient way of...

Development and Applications of Mechanics- and Data-based Capacity Models for Intact/Corroded Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders
DownloadFall 2022
Prestressed concrete (PC) highway bridges represent an integral part of the transportation network and contribute significantly to socio-economic development. However, highway bridges are susceptible to Deterioration and thus exhibit structural deficiency after years of service, especially in the...

Development and Evaluation of Interpretable Machine Learning Models for Mitigating Winter Road Safety – An Empirical Investigation
DownloadFall 2024
In Canada, winter crashes account for a significant portion of crashes each year. This thesis investigates the utility of machine learning (ML) for understanding and mitigating winter road risks. Despite their potential to achieve high predictive performance in the face of complex data...

Development and Evaluation of Model-Based Adaptive Signal Control for Congested Arterial Traffic
DownloadFall 2015
Under congested conditions, the road traffic states of different arterial links will interact with each other; therefore, it is necessary to understand the behavior of traffic corridors and to investigate corridor-wide traffic coordinated control strategies. In order to achieve this, traffic flow...

Development and Implementation of an Adaptive Transit Signal Priority Strategy in Microscopic Simulation
DownloadSpring 2014
Transit Signal Priority (TSP) strategies are widely used to reduce bus travel delay and improve bus service performance. State-of-the-art TSP strategies help buses cross intersections without stopping, either by green extension or red truncation, and enable adaptive TSP plans that reflect...

Development and Performance Evaluation of the Steel Moment-resisting Knee-braced Frame System Under Seismic and Wind Loads
DownloadFall 2024
The primary goal of this Ph.D. project is to develop an innovative steel lateral load-resisting system (LLRS), referred to as the Moment-resisting Knee-braced Frame (MKF), to resist wind and earthquake loads. This system is proposed as an alternative to conventional steel LLRSs for applications...

Spring 2013
The trapped geothermal heat in the infinite rock mass through which mine tunnels are excavated is a great threat to the safety of personnel and mine operating equipment in deep underground hot mines. In order to lessen the temperature inside the tunnel, a considerable amount of energy is being...

Development of a 3D Equivalent Continuum Model for Deformation Analysis of Systematically Jointed Rock Masses
DownloadFall 2013
Deformability of jointed rock masses are potentially anisotropic and non-linear due to existence of the discontinuities intersecting the rock matrix. Models to analysis the deformation of jointed rock masses are divided into two main categories: discontinuum models and equivalent continuum...
