This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Developing and Testing a Framework to Measure the Sanitation Efficacy on a Random Particle Level in Composting Industry
DownloadFall 2014
Both direct and indirect process validation regulations are being used to ensure the safety of compost products. The North American guidelines specify upper limits for certain pathogenic and indicator microbes, which are presumably achieved by exposing every particle of compost to temperatures...
-
Fall 2018
The Province of Alberta constructs new highways and widens existing roadways relying responding to demand. Absent from these improvements, however, are other capacity expansion and demand management strategies such as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and ramp metering—strategies that exist on...

Developing Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Model for Construction Labour Productivity Prediction and Optimization
DownloadFall 2021
Construction labour productivity (CLP) is considered one of the most important parameters affecting the performance of construction projects. Therefore, modeling CLP is a crucial step in construction projects. Accurate prediction of CLP helps in effective planning, cost estimating, and...
-
Spring 2024
This work aims to conduct a techno-economic feasibility analysis of adopting a hybrid approach to hydrogen generation. This includes grey hydrogen sourced from natural gas using Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and green hydrogen from renewable energy. The key focus is on assessing the environmental...

Developing Models for Estimating Winter Road Weather and Surface Conditions–An Empirical Investigation
DownloadSpring 2019
Inclement weather poses a threat to road safety and mobility for motorists in cold regions during winter. To facilitate more efficient winter maintenance decision support and reduce weather-related collisions, many transportation agencies have adopted one of the most critical highway...

Developing Penetration Rate Prediction Models to Enhance the Productivity Prediction of Microtunneling Construction Projects
DownloadSpring 2023
Predicting the productivity of microtunnelling construction projects is challenging due to the inherent complexities of this trenchless excavation method. One of these complexities has to do with estimating the micro-tunnel boring machine penetration rate, given that it is subject to a number of...
-
Developing Risk Breakdown Matrix for Onshore Wind Farm Projects Using Fuzzy Case-Based Reasoning
DownloadSpring 2021
Many countries have invested in the development of renewable energy projects, particularly onshore and offshore wind farm projects because of their low adverse environmental impact on the environment. However, onshore and offshore wind farm projects are novel types of projects in most countries...
-
Fall 2018
The research presented in this thesis aims to develop unfenced facilities and supportive surroundings where individuals with dementia can live comfortably, securely, relatively independently, and be positively integrated into their communities. Specialized organizations exist for people with...

Development and Application of BowTie Risk Assessment Methodology for Carbon Geological Storage Projects
DownloadFall 2014
The objective of this research is to develop a framework for risk assessment of CO2 geological storage projects. This is achieved using the BowTie approach as a framework for capturing the failure of CO2 geological storage, and using BowTie approach to combine different failure mechanisms such as...

Development and application of Fenton and UV-Fenton processes at natural pH using chelating agents for the treatment of oil sands process-affected water
DownloadFall 2016
The increasing amount of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), its high toxicity towards aquatic organisms due to naphthenic acids (NAs) and other organics, and the zero discharge practice of the oil sands industry urge researchers to seek effective approaches for its treatment. Advanced...
