This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Optimization, adaptation and application of protein misfolding cyclic amplification to detection of prions in blood plasma
DownloadFall 2010
The PMCA assay was optimized for adaptation to low level detection of PrPSc in hamster plasma. Evaluation of numerous key variables of the PMCA assay led to an optimized protocol capable of ~3 log10 amplification after 32 cycles (two 16 hour rounds). When commercially purchased normal hamster...

Optimizing Electric Vehicle Charging Networks: Adaptive Placement and Energy Management in Uncertain Environments
DownloadSpring 2024
With the emerging proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs) in traffic, the optimal deployment of EV charging stations has become a critical issue due to the foreseeable significant impact on conventional power distribution systems and traffic networks. With the complex coupling between...

Production Optimization and Sensory Evaluation of Egg White Protein Hydrolysate with Angiotensin I Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Activity
DownloadFall 2016
Egg proteins are a well-known rich source of bioactive peptides with inhibitory activity against angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE), a key enzyme responsible for the regulation of blood pressure. Peptides with ACE inhibitory activity could have potential application for prevention of high...

Profiling true microbial community of newborn beef calves using low microbial biomass samples
DownloadFall 2023
Amplicon sequencing (16S rRNA gene sequencing) is widely used to profile host-associated microbial communities. Rapid advancements in sequencing and user-friendly bioinformatics platforms have improved the knowledge of microbial community composition. However, profiling samples containing low...

Spring 2020
Reinforcement learning (RL) has received wide attention in various fields lately. Model-free RL brings data-driven solutions that learn the control strategy directly from interaction with process data without the need for a process model. This is especially beneficial in the case of nonlinear...

Robust Gaussian Process Regression and its Application in Data-driven Modeling and Optimization
DownloadFall 2015
Availability of large amounts of industrial process data is allowing researchers to explore new data-based modelling methods. In this thesis, Gaussian process (GP) regression, a relatively new Bayesian approach to non-parametric data based modelling is investigated in detail. One of the primary...
