This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2019
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) has the potential to significantly reduce oxides of nitrogen NOx emissions, while maintaining a high fuel efficiency compared to existing lean-burn spark ignition engines. HCCI is characterized by compression induced autoignition of a lean...

Real-Time Electromagnetic Transient Hardware Emulation of Multi-Terminal High Voltage DC Grid
DownloadFall 2018
New high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission projects are being increasingly operated globally, which can be developed into multi-terminal DC (MTDC) grid interconnecting the conventional AC grid and the off-shore renewable energy power plants. Among various power converter topologies, modular...

Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop Emulation of Electric Machines for Electrified Transportation Systems
DownloadFall 2018
Design and prototyping of electric power components and systems employing off-line transient simulation tools are inefficient due to, first, time consumption of sequential processors for several cycles of testing, and second, inaccuracy arising from simplifications in the modeling of the entire...

Real-Time Nonlinear Frequency-Dependent Electromagnetic Transient Power Transformer Model Hardware Emulation
DownloadSpring 2016
A transformer is a vital piece of transmission and distribution infrastructure in a power system which is used to transfer energy from one circuit to another. Real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation plays an important role in the design and testing of protection and control systems...

Simulation of quantization noise effects on the performance of a wireless preamble detector and demonstration of a functional FPGA prototype
DownloadFall 2009
This thesis describes the implementation of the physical layer for an experimental low-power wireless communication device. The system utilizes differential coherent correlation and threshold-based detection to produce a robust random-access packet-based communications protocol. Prior to...
