Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Area Yield Crop Insurance and Diversification in Ghana: An Agricultural Household Programming Model
DownloadFall 2016
Although diversification and insurance are acknowledged as important in ameliorating risk, to our knowledge, no empirical study has investigated how the two approaches work in concert in developing countries. Given increasing climate variability and the risks it poses to rain-fed agriculture,...

Simulation is often used to model production processes with the aim of understanding and improving them. In many cases, however, information produced by simulation is not detailed enough and can be misinterpreted. The use of visualization in combination with simulation can provide project...

Abstract: Introduction: Partial bladder outlet obstruction (pBOO) is a ubiquitous problem that results in renal damage. We hypothesize that change in the bladder progresses over time. Methods: Fischer rats underwent surgical pBOO for 2, 4, 8, or 13 weeks and were compared to shams. Urodynamic...

Geostatistical techniques are used to estimate recoverable reserves at unsampled locations and to quantify uncertainty. Several variables are often measured and important for reserve evaluation. Using more variables improves the quality of modeling, but quantifying the relationships between the...

Characterization of hypertrophic scar formation in nude and knockout mice deficient in T, B and natural killer cells
DownloadSpring 2012
Introduction: Hypertrophic scar (HSc) is a fibroproliferative disorder lacking a relevant animal model. Our objective is to characterize proliferative scars in human xenografts generated after grafting human skin onto mice deficient in T, B and natural killer cells. Methods: Nude, T-cell receptor...

Fall 2013
Hydraulic transport is commonly employed in the mining industry to transport crushed ore to a processing facility. Dense slurry flows inflict heavy wear on pipes, leading to significant process downtime and loss of revenue. Several factors have been identified as key contributors to pipe wear. ...

Compact and accurate hardware simulation of wireless channels for single and multiple antenna systems
DownloadFall 2009
The accurate simulation of wireless channels is important since it permits the realistic and repeatable performance measurement of wireless systems. While software simulation is a flexible method for testing hardware models, its long-running simulation time can be prohibitive in many scenarios....

High Chromium Cast Irons (HCCIs) are widely used in mineral processing, slurry pumping and manufacturing processes, where high resistance to erosion and synergetic erosion-corrosion is required. The excellent performance of HCCIs results from their microstructure, which consists of hard carbides...

Fall 2016
α-Synuclein has been implicated in the progression of Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This work reports on the structural propensity and druggability of this protein using a combination of Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics, and Virtual...
