Mind the Gap: Assessing Climate Change Vulnerability across Populations

SSHRC KSG awarded 2020: For this project, we will generate three scoping reviews to examine health-related exposure to extreme events like heat waves, wildfires, floods, drought, and air pollution; populations' sensitivity to these exposures; and the adaptive capacity of systems, institutions, and humans to cope with these exposures in these settings. Health-related climate change vulnerability is assessed in terms of exposure (contact), sensitivity (characteristics that may increase risk), and adaptive capacity (ability to adjust) across specific populations (older adults, pregnant women, infants, children, outdoor workers, immigrants) in Canada and South Asia (with Nepal as a specific case study). The goal is to evaluate inequities concerning health effects of climate change and improve our capacity to monitor effects and reduce health risks through targeted, effective, short-,medium-, and long-term adaptation and risk mitigation approaches.
