  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • SSRHC IG awarded 2020: This project collaborates with women who are 55 years or older and who self-identify as Muslim and living in Edmonton, Alberta to examine the question: ‘what are Muslim women’s experiences of social connectedness in older age?’ Research objectives include 1) to explore how religiosity and religious affiliation intersects with other markers of social location and identity to shape social connectedness in older age; and 2) to formulate a conceptual framework of drivers, barriers, and facilitators of social connectedness for Muslim older women. This two-year project will facilitate the creation of safe and empowering spaces for Muslim older women to explore their aging experiences. Using cameras, women will capture visual representations of social connectedness in every day life. Narrative interviews with women will elicit stories about living and growing old in Canada. Facilitated group meetings will allow for sharing, connecting, and reflecting with peers over the duration of the research project. A community advisory committee, led by the Council of Muslims on Aging Gracefully and comprised of Muslim older women, will support the recruitment of participants from the (a) Al-Rashid Mosque, (b)Markaz-Ul-Islam , and (c) Al-Rahma Mosque., data collection, and analysis of visual and narrative data to maximize ethical and credible knowledge co-construction.
