SSHRC IG awarded 2020: project addresses the need to understand the differences in employment experiences and outcomes for marginalised groups, particularly women, employed in the video game industry in North America. A a staggering number of women leave the video game industry within the first three years of employment. This multi-year research project will uncover the barriers to successful, long-term employment in the video game industry for highly-skilled workers. Methods include a longitudinal study to track the employment experiences of 200 graduates from postsecondary video game programs in Canada and the USA over their first three years in the workforce: we'll interview participants in the final year of their undergraduate degree and then again each year for three years, we'll track a wide range of educational and career information including participants' field of study, the professional opportunities that were part of their education, job applications submitted and offers received, and positive and negative experiences; interviews will be supplemented with social media and LinkedIn profiles, industry-wide surveys. Community partners include the International Game Developers Association.
