SSHRC IG awarded 2021: Calls for police reform are echoing across the world. In North America, a spotlight has been placed on police failings. The media has illuminated brutality, violence, and racism as long-standing faults of police systems. Many Canadians have passionately argued that police officers systematically target groups who are already facing disadvantage, including marginalized youth. Others staunchly support police systems. We are utterly lacking a scientific perspective on the viewpoints of marginalized youth with respect to police systems. There are three objectives for this qualitative Participatory Action Research (PAR) study. We will aim to (1) build understandings of how marginalized youth experience interactions with police, (2) generate knowledge through community dialogues to implement changes within the police system toward better serving marginalized youth, and (3) develop, deliver, evaluate, and refine resources and training opportunities for police to effectively work with marginalized youth.
