Tracking the Evolutionary History of Development Genes: Implications for the Diversification of Fruits and Flowers in the Brassicaceae and Cleomaceae
DownloadFall 2014
Flowers of Brassicaceae are remarkably similar across all species, whereas their fruits vary in almost all conceivable traits, particularly in the tribe Brassiceae. In contrast, Brassicaceae’s sister family, Cleomaceae, exhibits substantial variation in flowers but are more uniform in their...

Recombination between co-infecting poxviruses provides an important mechanism for generating genetic diversity in the face of selection pressures. However, poxviruses replicate in membrane-bound enclosed cytoplasmic structures known as factories or virosomes that could impede DNA mixing between...

Trading patterns in US financial markets have undergone significant changes in the past two decades. Using a 21-year (1993-2013) sample of intraday data, this thesis documents the ways in which the size distribution of trades—that is, the distribution of trades based on their dollar value—has...

Fall 2020
This thesis discusses bi-criteria optimization queries in road networks, in particular queries that allow users to consider trade-offs between alternative solutions. In order to measure the proximity of two nodes in a road network, a cost optimal path between them is typically computed, for...

A ubiquitous problem for all foragers is the trade-off between acquiring food energy while simultaneously avoiding the risk of predation. In central montane Alberta I modelled how ungulate forage changes with succession within cutblocks and the implications for forage availability to ungulates...

Trade-offs between wood density and radial growth in the Region H white spruce Controlled Parentage Program, Alberta, Canada
DownloadFall 2019
Trade-offs between wood density and radial growth rate in white spruce were investigated. Decreases in wood density associated with increased radial growth rate have been well documented in several tree species, including white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss)....
