This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Air-core microcavities and metal-dielectric filters - building blocks for optofluidic microsystems
DownloadFall 2012
This thesis describes a study on two optical devices intended to be building blocks for the creation of integrated optical/microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems. First, arrays of curved-mirror dome-shaped microcavities were fabricated by buckling self-assembly of a-Si/SiO2 multilayers. This novel...
-
Integrated Hollow-Core Microcavity Arrays - Building Blocks for Optical Sensing and Quantum Information
DownloadFall 2017
This thesis describes an experimental and theoretical study of a novel class of air-core microcavities on chips, monolithically fabricated by the controlled formation of delamination buckles within a-Si/SiO2-based multilayer thin film stacks. First, arrays of dome-shaped microcavities were...
-
Fall 2010
This thesis describes the fabrication and characterization of integrated hollow Bragg waveguides fabricated by controlled thin film buckling. Hollow waveguides based on two different set of materials were studied. In the first case, thermal tuning of air-core dimensions was studied using...
-
Fall 2020
This thesis describes the theory, fabrication, and characterization of on-chip, integrated Fabry-Perot microcavities embedded with thin silicon nitride membranes. The approach combines a previously developed process for fabricating self-assembled Si / SiO2 / Ta2O5 curved mirror cavities, with a...

Fall 2013
Metal-dielectric thin film multilayers are of significant interest as transparent conductors, band-pass filters, and metamaterials. This thesis describes an experimental study of optical tunnelling through periodic metal-dielectric (MD) multilayers with the goal of optimizing the transmittance...
-
Fall 2020
This thesis describes the design, fabrication, morphological overview, optical characterization, and fluid infiltration of ‘open-access’, small mode-volume, and high quality-factor Fabry-Perot micro-cavities in the telecommunication range followed by the simulation of a-Si:H/SiO2-based Bragg...
