This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Thermal cracking of the vacuum residue fraction of bitumen and petroleum is an important feature of several refinery processes. At normal process temperatures, this fraction remains liquid, which favors coke formation. In order to understand the reaction yields and intrinsic reaction kinetics of...

This project examines the concept of “interiority”, the thoughts and feelings of other individuals, as a kind of literary device in the works of Qiu Miaojin and Wu Ming-yi. Rather than reinforce binaristic thinking, this considers interiority as a tension between public and private, between self...

Studies related to miRNAs and their ability to alter protein expression have gained much attention in recent years. miRNAs are short single stranded non-coding RNAs (~20 nts) that function in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional modification of gene expression. These short non-coding RNAs...

High throughput genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the Plasmodium falciparum dhfr and dhps genes by asymmetric PCR and melt-curve analysis
DownloadFall 2011
Mutations within Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (pfdhfr) and dihydropteroate synthase (pfdhps) genes contribute to resistance to antimalarials such as sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within codons 51, 59, 108 and 164 in the pfdhfr gene and...

Fall 2010
We have developed several generations of high voltage (HV) integrated circuits that provide micro-scale platforms for lab-on-a-chip applications. This thesis presents novel HV devices and circuits that lead to further miniaturization and minimize the dependence on off-chip components. A...

High-dimensional data mining: subspace clustering, outlier detection and applications to classification
DownloadSpring 2010
Data mining in high dimensionality almost inevitably faces the consequences of increasing sparsity and declining differentiation between points. This is problematic because we usually exploit these differences for approaches such as clustering and outlier detection. In addition, the exponentially...

Fall 2021
A great deal of statistical research has been done in high- and ultrahigh-dimensional settings in recent years. Regularized approaches have been extensively used in dealing with high-dimensional datasets. It is widely acknowledged that robust procedures are important to deal with the influence of...
