Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

A Fuzzy Hybrid Intelligent Model for Project Competencies and Performance Evaluation and Prediction in the Construction Industry
DownloadSpring 2016
In contemporary construction environments, construction companies measure their performance against a set of predefined performance indicators. These performance indicators are governed by the ability of the company to maintain necessary sets of “competencies” that empower the successful...

Fall 2019
Gene regulatory networks (GRN) play a central role in the specification, differentiation and function of the central nervous system (CNS) during development. During vertebrate retinal development, six types of neural cells and one type of glial cell are specified in a temporal order from a pool...

Spring 2010
In this work, we present a unified, general approach to variance reduction in agent evaluation using machine learning to minimize variance. Evaluating an agent's performance in a stochastic setting is necessary for agent development, scientific evaluation, and competitions. Traditionally,...

A General Framework of Optimal Stochastic Optimization with Dependent Data: Multiple Optimality Guarantee, Sample Complexity, and Tractability
DownloadSpring 2023
We consider stochastic optimization in settings where the distribution of unknown parameters is observable only through finitely dependent training samples. Using the Sample Averaging Approximation ({SAA}), we specifically study the data-driven procedure in which, instead of receiving samples...

A general route to 1,3'-bipyrroles, conversion of cyclohexenone-type systems into phenols and synthetic studies on Coleophomone B
DownloadFall 2016
Chapter 1 describes a general route for making 1,3'-bipyrroles. This work involves intermolecular conjugate displacement using a special Michael acceptor developed in this laboratory. This method is general and enables the construction of highly substituted 1,3'-bipyrroles. The route was first...

A General Route to meta-(Arylsulfanyl) and meta-(Alkylsulfanyl) Substituted Phenols and Synthetic Studies on Sorbicillactones A and B
DownloadSpring 2022
Chapter 1 describes a general route for making meta-(arylsulfanyl) and meta-(alkylsulfanyl) phenols using DBU assisted aromatization developed in this laboratory. Thismethod is general and enables the construction of the C-S bond without using high temperatures or transition metal catalyst. The...
