This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2016
Three main areas were investigated: characterization of the thermally cracked naphtha, development of novel denitrogenation reactions to remove basic nitrogen compounds from the naphtha, and fundamental study of chemistry that removes neutral nitrogen compounds from model oil. Identification and...

Dependence of the Interfacial Adhesion between Two Different Types of Material on their Electron Work Function and Electrical Conductivity
DownloadFall 2021
We observed and investigated a novel interfacial phenomenon related to the dependence of interfacial bonding or adhesive force (Fad) between two substances on the difference in their Electron Work Functions (EWF) or Δφ, and developed a model to quantify such a dependence. First, using...

Dependence of the Mechanical Behavior of Alloys on Electron Work Function—A Promising Alternative Parameter for Materials Characterization and Design
DownloadFall 2017
With rapid advance in materials technology, structural material design has been required to rely on more fundamental principles. Conventional metallurgical rules have been successfully used in materials design for centuries but limitations are still there. Many expensive and time-consuming...

Fall 2015
Mechanical, tribological and corrosion properties of metallic materials are of significance to their industrial applications and have been studied for long time. Efforts are continuously made to correlate these properties to more fundamental parameters in order to effectively improve the...

Spring 2014
Seven Ni-WC tubular wires utilized in this study were characterized by the nickel sheath area, powder composition, and overall initial carbide volume fraction of the wire prior to welding. The electrical resistivity of steel, stainless steel, and Ni-WC welding consumables were measured from...

Deposition and Characterization of AlN and GaN Thin Films by Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition
DownloadSpring 2015
III-nitride semiconductors have a combination of structural characteristics and engineering properties that give them a unique place among semiconductors. The fact that they have the same crystal structure makes it possible to deposit alloys with fine-tuned band gaps from infrared to ultraviolet...

Spring 2011
In thin film fabrication, growth of high quality thin films with reproducibile properties is one of the main challenges. In order to achieve this goal, the influnce of the deposition system control parameters on film properties must be studied. This can be a complex process since many...
