Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2012
Recent proliferation of low-cost and lightweight GPS tracking devices led to a large increase in the amounts of collected mobility data. The rapidly emerging field of location-based services requires accurate and informative knowledge mining from these large quantities of data. One such mobility...

Spring 2011
The statistical properties of training, validation and test data play an important role in assuring optimal performance in artificial neural networks (ANN). Re-searchers have proposed randomized data partitioning (RDP) and stratified data partitioning (SDP) methods for partition of input data...

A Data Driven Approach to Creating a Traffic Sign Asset Inventory using Remote Sensing Technology
DownloadSpring 2019
Traffic signs play a critical role in the safety and efficiency of any roadway, but with limited information on the current status of traffic sign inventories, the placement and condition of traffic signs goes largely unchecked. Therefore, the collection of a complete traffic sign inventory (TSI)...

A Data-Driven Method for Measuring Position Resolution in the DEAP-3600 DarkMatter Detector
DownloadFall 2019
DEAP-3600 is a single-phase liquid Argon dark matter detector operated at SNOLAB in Ontario, Canada, searching for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). It is well-established that astronomical and cosmological observations suggest the existence of some form of unseen matter in the...

Spring 2021
Alarm systems are considered to be essential components of industrial control systems, and are used to communicate the indication of alarm states to operators, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of modern industrial plants. Ideally, alarms should only appear when there are abnormal...

A Data-Driven Neural Network Model to Correct Derived Features in a RANS-Based Simulation of the Flow Around a Sharp-Edge Bluff Body
DownloadSpring 2023
In this dissertation, a machine-learning method is utilized to enhance the accuracy of wake parameters calculated by Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) k-ω SST model of flow on and around wall-mounted rectangular cylinders. Using high-quality results from Large Eddy Simulation (LES), this...
