This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

An integrated framework to handle design, complexity, and controls challenges in industrial systems
DownloadSpring 2019
During the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in automation. Mechanical processes and operations are continuously being automated. Mechanical assemblies are no longer only mechanical, but also contain a large portion of electrical wires, connections, and controls signals....

Spring 2014
Nakashima-Paniagua, Benjamin T.
Innovative products based on micro and nanotechnologies (MNT) have made rapid improvements in terms of functionality, cost and performance. Several developments based on these technologies have already benefited society greatly. However, many applications and devices based on these systems are...

An Intelligent Fault Diagnosis Approach for Power Transformers Based on Support Vector Machines
DownloadFall 2017
Power transformers are essential for the operations of industrial systems such as metal production plants, and for the transmission and distribution of electricity to end users. Power transformer failures can cause huge loss of production, expensive downtime, significant costs for repair or...
-
An Intelligent Framework for Automatic Maintenance Plan Generation based-on Product Features Recognition
DownloadSpring 2019
Maintenance takes care of the health of equipment and/or mechanical system. Currently, maintenance is considered as one of the most labor-intensive and expert-centered manufacturing process, since disassembly/assembly procedures and its level of difficulty, makes it very difficult to automate the...
-
Spring 2024
The manufacturing sector stands as a fundamental pillar of worldwide economies, contributing markedly to global economic expansion. Over the past five years, the implementation of automated machine-tending systems has widely extended from simulation or laboratory environments to real-world...

An Intelligent framework for Quality Inspection and Control in Aquaponics, based on Computer-vision, Artificial Intelligence, and Knowledge modeling
DownloadSpring 2023
The burgeoning global population and subsequent food security issues have attracted much attention toward sustainable food production systems. As one of the emerging vertical farming methods, aquaponics promises to be a sustainable alternative to food and environmental problems. Aquaponics in...

An Investigation of The Pressure Loss Characteristics for Highly Viscous Fluid Flow Through Narrow Slots
DownloadSpring 2016
An investigation was conducted to study the pressure loss characteristics of a highly viscous fluid flow across a sudden contraction. The objective of this work was to have a better understanding about the fluid flow phenomena across a narrow slot, which resembles the produced oil flow through...
-
An investigation of the strain field and inter-fragmentary movement of a broken hemi-pelvis
DownloadFall 2015
Pelvic fracture is considered a common and sometimes fatal injury. There are still developments in novel pelvic fixations. In order to investigate the performance of these fixations, a specialized testing set-up is required. Typically, the strains of a few selected points and the changes in the...
-
An Investigation of Using n-Si Piezoresistive Behavior to Develop a Three-Dimensional Stress Sensing Rosette
DownloadFall 2013
This work involves the design, microfabrication, calibration, and testing of a new silicon-based piezoresistive rosette capable of extracting the three-dimensional (3D) stresses in the silicon upon deformation. A new 10-element piezoresistive rosette was devised to extract all stress components...

Fall 2017
Currently the understanding of morphological evolution of soot aggregates under the influence of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and the process of SOA restructuring are not well known. As a consequence, the uncertainty in the estimation of the radiative forcing from soot aggregates is high. The...
