This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Development of Robust Equilibrium Calculation Algorithms for Reservoir Fluids at Given Volume, Temperature and Composition
DownloadFall 2020
Two-phase and three-phase equilibria can be frequently observed in the petroleum industry. To accurately predict the phase behavior of complex fluid mixtures lies at the core of the analysis and design of petroleum recovery and petrochemical processes. Normally, engineers or researchers rely on...

Development of Robust Multiphase Equilibrium Calculation Algorithms for Complex Reservoir Fluids Containing Asphaltene
DownloadSpring 2024
Multiphase equilibria, including three-phase vapor-liquid-asphaltene (VLS) equilibria and four-phase vapor-liquid-aqueous-asphaltene (VLAS) equilibria, can appear during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes. Robust multiphase equilibrium calculation algorithms are important techniques in...

Development of Robust Three-Phase Equilibrium Calculation Algorithms for Complex Reservoir Fluids
DownloadFall 2019
Three-phase equilibria, such as three-phase vapor-liquid-aqueous (VLA) equilibria and three-phase vapor-liquid-asphaltene (VLS) equilibria, can frequently appear in hydrocarbon reservoirs. In three-phase equilibrium calculations, one of the most prominent problems is caused by the lack of a prior...

Fall 2023
Crude oil, as a major type of fossil fuels, is a mixture mainly made up of hydrocarbons. One important research topic relevant to the extraction, transportation, and storage of these hydrocarbon mixtures is the study of multiphase equilibria under specified specifications, especially the...

Development of Solvent Selection Criteria Based on Diffusion Rate, Mixing Quality, and Solvent Retrieval for Optimal Heavy-Oil and Bitumen Recovery at Different Temperatures
DownloadFall 2015
Heavy-oil and bitumen recovery requires high recovery factors to offset the extreme high cost of the process. Attention has been given to solvent injection for this purpose and it has been observed that high recoveries are achievable when combined with steam injection. Heavier (“liquid”) solvents...

Fall 2015
One of the most effective ways to lower the energy used to heat or cool residential and commercial buildings is Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) systems. These systems store thermal energy in underground enclosures (borefield) where it can be used when it is needed. UTES systems...

Spring 2024
Statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT)-type equations of states (EOSs) are commonly utilized in the chemical and petroleum industry to model the phase behavior of both pure and complex fluids because of its solid theoretical framework based on a perturbation theory. For the most SAFT-type...

Development, Modelling and Control of a Continuous Pilot Scale Supercritical Fluid Extraction Process
DownloadSpring 2017
In this thesis, the feasibility and operation of a continuous pilot scale supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process for treatment of oil-contaminated solids, specifically drill cuttings, was investigated. For this purpose, a continuous pilot scale SFE process, the first of its kind, was...
