This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Bioturbation and Resource Quality: A Case Study from the Upper Cretaceous Lysing and Nise Formations, Ellida and Midnatsoll Fields, Norwegian Sea
DownloadSpring 2013
Nine cores (approx. 156 m) within the Upper Cretaceous Lysing and Nise formations (Møre Basin, Norwegian continental shelf) are studied in order to assess the relationship between bioturbate fabric and the resulting permeability distribution. Overall, the Lysing and Nise formations strata...
-
Ichnology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and trace fossil-permeability relationships in the Upper Cretaceous Medicine Hat Member, Medicine Hat gas field, southeast Alberta, Canada
DownloadFall 2010
The Upper Cretaceous Medicine Hat Member (Niobrara Formation) in western Canada contains abundant reserves of biogenic natural gas. In the Medicine Hat gas field area of southeast Alberta, nineteen cored intervals were examined and classified based on primary physical and biogenic sedimentary...

Neoichnology and Sedimentology of the Fluvial-Tidal Transition Zone of the Columbia River Delta, northwest U.S.A.
DownloadSpring 2012
The Columbia River Delta, northwest U.S.A., is a complex depositional environment at the mouth of the second largest United States’ river. Through the study of tidal sand bars within the fluvial-tidal transition, neoichnological and sedimentological characteristics of the mixed-energy...
-
Paleodepositional Environments and Stratigraphic Framework for the Lower Cretaceous Bluesky Formation and Related Strata in the Peace River Oil Sands Deposit of Alberta
DownloadFall 2017
The Early Cretaceous Bluesky Formation in the Peace River oil sands area of west-central Alberta, Canada hosts significant bitumen resources. This work is part of an ongoing endeavour by researchers and practitioners in academia and industry to develop paleodepositional and sequence stratigraphic...
-
Quantitative Techniques in Ichnology and Sedimentology with Examples from the Cretaceous McMurray Formation, NE Alberta, Canada
DownloadSpring 2018
Process ichnology is a relatively new ichnological tool whereby trace fossils are interpreted as the product of changing infaunal stresses including: salinity fluctuation, reduced oxygenation, high sedimentation rates, reduced nutrient availability, and elevated hydraulic energy. In this...
-
Sedimentological and ichnological characteristics of modern and ancient channel-fills, Willapa Bay, Washington
DownloadFall 2011
Estuarine-associated facies make up a significant component of ancient geological systems, and are exceedingly economically important today for their ability to trap hydrocarbons. While many aspects of estuaries are understood today, little is documented regarding the sedimentological and...
-
SEDIMENTOLOGICAL AND ICHNOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE LATE CARBONIFEROUS–MIDDLE PERMIAN SUCCESSION IN THE SUBSURFACE OF CENTRAL SAUDI ARABIA
DownloadFall 2023
The Late Carboniferous–Middle Permian Unayzah Group is a widespread sand-rich stratigraphic unit with equivalent deposits across the subsurface of the Arabian Peninsula. Historically, sediment deposition for this interval in the subsurface of Saudi Arabia has been ascribed to continental settings...
-
Sedimentological and Ichnological Dynamics of the Early Cambrian Mount Clark Formation, Northwest Territories, Canada
DownloadSpring 2017
The early Cambrian Mount Clark Formation of the Northwest Territories comprises marginal marine to marine siliciclastic sediments deposited in an incipient rift basin on the margin of Laurentia. Within core and outcrop datasets the preserved record of sedimentation represents complex and highly...
-
Sedimentology and Neoichnology of a Wave-Dominated, Tidally-Influenced, Fully Marine Bay, Oregon, USA
DownloadFall 2013
In the field of ichnology it is understood that modern process ichnological observations of biogenically generated structures, in response to various physicochemical parameters, have substantial applicability to deciphering trace fossil assemblages observed in the rock record. Previous research...

Sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Granite Wash: Contact Rapids and Keg River Sandstone (Red Earth area)
DownloadFall 2010
The Granite Wash is comprised of diachronous, Cambrian to Devonian sandstone deposits, which include the Devonian Contact Rapids and Keg River sandstones of which this study will focus. Prolific oil production from the Granite Wash has fueled exploration since the 1950s and as a result...
