This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Reliability Assessment and Energy Modeling for Alberta's Oil Sands Surface Mining Equipment
DownloadSpring 2016
Alberta’s surface mining sector is one of the largest energy-consuming industries in Canada, and so oil sands mining equipment performance has a significant impact on the economy. To achieve more sustainable oil sands mining production in Alberta, one of the influential factors is the improvement...

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Ultrasonic Leakage Detection (ULD) as a maintenance and condition monitoring technique for freight rail airbrakes in cold weather conditions
DownloadSpring 2015
Freight rail airbrakes need improvement in reliability to reduce failures, which can lead to harm to the environment, loss of human life, and a negative impact on the economy. This research focuses on identifying the failures of airbrakes using a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) framework,...

Fall 2016
Reliability estimation based on condition monitoring data contains two important parts: thresholding and probability density estimation. Thresholding is to determine a critical level of an indicator corresponding to the transition of system states. Probability density estimation is to estimate...

Reliability of a North American Freight Railcar Air Brake Inspection Method Using Wheel Temperature Detectors
DownloadSpring 2018
This research evaluates the current legally mandated train air brake test within Canada and provides further comparison with a technology driven approach used by Canadian Pacific known as Automated Train Brake Effectiveness (ATBE). The current No. 1 Air Brake Test mandated by Transport Canada is...

Fall 2016
In 2011, Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway decided to replace the visual No.1 Air Brake test with a new Automated Train Brake Effectiveness (ATBE) for condition monitoring of rail cars through both physical inspection and measurements by fixed track-side Wheel Temperature Detectors (WTD). To make the...
