This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2021
The purpose of this dissertation is to generate better solutions for the existing problems in the wireless communications and navigation systems by designing antennas with special characteristics such as circular polarization (CP), tilted beam, transparency, high gain, front to back ratio (FBR)...

Transparent transducers and fast electronics for next-generation ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging
DownloadSpring 2022
Most ultrasound transducers are opaque. Transparent transducers could lead to novel applications, including combined optical and ultrasound imaging, photoacoustic imaging and other multi-modality systems. This thesis introduces transparent capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers and...

Spring 2014
Emerging devices, such as those based on carbon (in the form of graphene or nanotubes) or III-V compound semiconductors, are constructed on an atomic scale, where the transport is governed by the Schrödinger equation of quantum mechanics or the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) of semi-classical...

Treatment of early age-related macular degeneration in a cell culture model with femtosecond laser pulses
DownloadFall 2017
This thesis work focuses on obtaining preliminary results demonstrating the isolated femtosecond laser ablation of sub-RPE drusen-like deposits. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an age-onset degenerative condition of the retina that can lead to legal blindness. The early stages of the...
-
Fall 2020
This thesis describes the design, fabrication and characterization of tunable bandpass filter devices based on optical tunneling. The filters were manufactured from the hybrid assembly of first hemi-cylindrical and later hemi-spherical lenses, with a multi-layer thin-film stack deposited on the...

Ultra Wideband Radar Technology and Signal Processing Methods for the Multiphase Flow Monitoring and Tunnel Boring Operations
DownloadSpring 2024
Ultra-wideband (UWB) radar technology can provide solutions for many existing challenges in the industry. In this research, we tackle three existing problems in the oil industry and tunnel construction operations. First, microwave imaging and associated signal processing techniques are proposed...

Fall 2016
Ultra wideband (UWB)- synthetic aperture radars are emerging devices that are ideal for sensing and imaging applications in many special conditions such as monitoring subsurfaces, through-wall imaging, non-destructive characterization of materials, oil reservoir monitoring, weather forecasting,...

Fall 2018
High-frequency ultrasound (>20MHz) offers promising opportunities for high-resolution blood flow imaging of the microcirculation at superficial depths owing to high backscatter coefficient and high resolution. Because time-of-flight is minimal at these superficial depths, focused beam scanning...
