This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2015
Zaldivar Carrillo, Jorge Adalberto
The utilization of waste materials to generate value-added products is an appealing prospect that can generate economic and environmental benefits. When the end product of this process is itself environmentally friendly, the benefits escalate. Such is the case of the present work. M....

Spring 2014
Energy and utilities costs often represent one of the largest operating costs at manufacturing plants and they are areas where companies can reduce cost if optimal operating strategy is applied for efficient steam distribution and electricity generation. In addition to the financial incentive,...
-
Fall 2011
Optimization techniques, in conjunction with a finite element thermal model, are used in this thesis to optimize the temperature profile (i.e. cooling rate and coiling temperature) of a steel skelp during laminar cooling. Optimization parameters include skelp velocity, laminar cooling bank...

Optimization of the reaction conditions of two enzymes for use in a carbon sequestration process, and investigation into immobilization via encapsulation within polymersomes
DownloadFall 2016
Carbon dioxide emissions from human activities contribute to an increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In nature, this gas is sequestered through the use of enzymes found in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, with useful molecules such as sugars being synthesized as products. A biomimetic...
-
Fall 2016
The field of conducting polymers and mainly organic electrochemical transistors (OECT) have been investigated for bioelectronics applications. Advantages such as conformability, high quality electrical contact, ease of fabrication and biocompatibility made OECTs a great potential of future bio...

Organically-Modified Clay Minerals in Oil Sands: Characterization and Effect of Hydrothermal Treatment
DownloadFall 2017
The intimate association between bitumen components and clay minerals is an important feature of oil sands fine solids. These organically-modified clay minerals cause serious problems in Canadian oil sands production: hindering bitumen extraction, stabilizing water-in-bitumen emulsions, fouling...

Fall 2016
Management of abnormal events in chemical processes requires detection and diagnosis of abnormal performance of individual elements of the system. Detection of abnormal performance is usually done by means of setting a control limit on measured variables. Abnormality due to any reason in one...
-
Spring 2024
Abnormal events in chemical processes present significant challenges, often disrupting the performance of industrial operations. Accurate detection and diagnosis of abnormal behavior among control system elements are crucial to prevent potential process degradation and associated economic losses....

Fall 2017
In this study, an oxidant-induced mussel-inspired modification was implemented to prepare modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane utilizing the deposition of polydopamine (PDA) coating, which was oxidized by sodium periodate under a slightly acidic condition (pH = 5.0). The surface...
