Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Spring 2015
This work presents the numerical study of chemically reacting char particles in dense particulate media applied to fixed and fluidized beds. Our main goal was to approximate 3D fixed bed particles into 2D axisymmetric geometry using a representative element, which is found in Chapter 1. Dry air...

Fall 2017
Premature corrosion of reinforcing steel is a cause of concern for steel-reinforced concrete structures, since it causes them to deteriorate before their design operational life is attained. The Use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars in reinforced-concrete (RC) structures has been shown to...

Numerical Simulations of Anelastic and Boussinesq Rotating Convection with Radial Entropy Gradient Boundary Conditions
DownloadFall 2017
Observations from the gas giants Jupiter or Saturn allow for researchers to construct geophysical fluid dynamical numerical models in an attempt to replicate the observed features. Most models aim at replicating the zonal jets and the eddies observed on these gas giants to understand how they are...

Spring 2010
The percentage of shop fabrication, including pipe spool fabrication, has been increasing on industrial construction projects during the past years. Industrial fabrication has a great impact on construction projects due to the fact that the productivity is higher in a controlled environment than...

Fall 2015
The current rate and extent of human-induced changes to the environment are unprecedented. There is an urgent need to understand and predict the dynamics of coupled human and natural systems so that we can maintain the ecosystem services on which we depend. Temperate coastal regions have...

Periodic solutions and bistability in a model for cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response to human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)
DownloadFall 2009
HTLV-I is the first discovered human retrovirus and a causative agent of both adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (or tropical spastic paraparesis) (HAM/TSP). Previous models have been successful in providing insight into the progression of HTLV-I infection. The...

Fall 2011
This research was designed to determine what conceptual changes occur when students use computer simulations, and whether simulations with characteristics defined as engaging by Adams et al. (2008a; 2008b), Granlund, Berglund, and Eriksson (2000), Kali and Linn (2008), Kim, Yoon, Whang, Tversky,...

Fall 2013
Laydown yard management is comprised of planning and controlling of all necessary efforts to ensure that the correct quantity of materials are available where and when they are needed on construction storage yards. Applying the right material management methodology in construction projects would...

Spring 2010
A reliable estimate of the amount of oil or gas in a reservoir is required for development decisions. Uncertainty in reserve estimates affects resource/reserve classification, investment decisions, and development decisions. There is a need to make the best decisions with an appropriate level...

Queering High School: An Ethnodramatic Inqueery on Youth Experiences of Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic Harassment and Bullying
DownloadFall 2020
“Queering High School,” was a queer ethnodrama on the lived experience of LGBTQ youth in Alberta high schools that explored their experiences of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. This ethnodrama, conducted through a queer lens, which I refer to as an ethnodramatic inqueery, was grounded in...
