Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Nanoscale resonators fabricated from metallic alloys, and modeling and simulation of polycrystalline thin film growth
DownloadSpring 2010
Part I - We have designed a binary metallic alloy for nanoscale resonator applications. We used magnetron sputtering to deposit films with different stoichiometries of aluminum and molybdenum and then characterized the microstructure and physical properties of each film. A structure zone map is...

Neural networks modelling of stream nitrogen using remote sensing information: model development and application
DownloadFall 2009
In remotely located forest watersheds, monitoring nitrogen (N) in streams often is not feasible because of the high costs and site inaccessibility. Therefore, modelling tools that can predict N in unmonitored watersheds are urgently needed to support management decisions for these watersheds....

Spring 2012
Experimentally-validated nonlinear flight control of a helicopter UAV has two necessary conditions: an estimate of the vehicle’s states from noisy multirate output measurements, and a nonlinear dynamics model with minimum complexity, physically controllable inputs and experimentally identified...

Spring 2015
The objective of this dissertation was to find novel adsorbents addressing problems associated with acid gases. They are the most common contaminants in multiple aspects of petroleum processing and combustion gas clean up, which reduce the efficiency of petroleum refining and product quality....
-
Fall 2017
This work focuses on validation of a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS Fluent 16.2 applied to multi-phase modeling of fluidized beds. A two-phase Eulerian-Eulerian based model is used to numerically reproduce experiments carried out by Taghipour, F. et al (Chem. Eng....

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (SNSM) in northern Colombia, is one of the highest coastal mountains in the world with a maximum height of more than 5.7 km. Geophysical measurements report that there is a high Bouguer gravity anomaly (>+130 mGal) in the region, indicating that the mountain does...

Numerical Simulation Of Water Flow Through Unsaturated Soil In Vertical And Inclined Layered Systems
DownloadSpring 2016
In past decades, there were discussions explaining the mechanisms and factors that influence water flow through soil in unsaturated conditions. This phenomenon is of major importance to the mining industry as water is one of the trigger mechanisms for Acid Rock Generation (ARD) generation. In...

Fall 2012
This study was part the Canadian International Polar Year (IPY) project entitled Study of Canadian Arctic River-delta Fluxes (IPY-SCARF), aimed at quantifying fluxes from the Mackenzie Delta channels towards the Beaufort Sea. The flow and water level data collected during the study period from...

Spring 2012
Microalgae are a promising source of biofuels and other valuable chemicals. The low cell density and slow growth rate that have traditionally characterized microalgal cultures, however, have resulted in a reduced economical feasibility. To develop a sustainable microalgal process it is required...

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas with an elevated global warming potential (GWP) equivalent to 28 times that of CO2. Also, production of enteric CH4 results in a 2 to 12% loss of the gross energy intake of cattle thus knowing the amount of CH4 released to the environment is important. The...
